Davis Picks Up Third Defensive Player of the Week Award

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball junior libero Sydney Davis claimed Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third time in the 2017 season after the league chose her as the recipient for matches played Oct. 23-29.

Davis, who also won the award on Sept. 18 following the Chicago State Invitational and Oct. 2 after the Arkansas State-Little Rock home sweep, is the first Ragin' Cajun to receive three defensive player of the week awards from the Sun Belt in a single season.

She adds her name to the list of Ragin' Cajuns with three defensive player of the week honors in a career, a list that includes Claire Laires (1999-2002) and Lindsay Brown (2007-10).

Louisiana has now claimed seven weekly awards this season from the vote conducted by the league's head coaches. In addition to Davis' three defensive player of the week honors, Jessica Bartczyszyn was named setter of the week twice (Sept. 4, Sept. 25) and Hali Wisnoskie claimed freshman of the week twice (Sept. 11, Sept. 18).

Davis led the Ragin' Cajuns in digs in both matches and averaged 5.75 per set as the squad swept the UTA-Texas State weekend for the first time in program history and returned to the top of the Sun Belt West Division last weekend.

Davis' weekend performance was highlighted by a career-high 34 digs (6.80 per set) as she helped lead the Ragin' Cajuns to their first-ever win over Texas State. Davis had at least five digs each set against the Bobcats including six in the winner-take-all fifth frame as Louisiana ended Texas State's 10-match win streak and reclaimed the lead in the division.

The Ragin' Cajuns libero extended her current streak of consecutive matches with double digit digs to 11 and averaged over 5.00 digs per set over a SBC weekend for the third time in the past five weekends.

The Ragin' Cajuns (17-9, 10-2 Sun Belt), who have secured their spot in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament being held Nov. 16-19 in Jonesboro, Ark., embark this week on a regular season-ending, four-match road trip that precedes the event. Louisiana starts the stretch this weekend in Alabama facing South Alabama on Friday and Troy on Saturday.
