Ragin' Cajuns Dominate Second Half To Beat LSUA

10/31/2017 10:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball

LAFAYETTE- Fueled by four Ragin' Cajuns scoring in double digits, the Louisiana women's basketball team opened up their 2017-18 exhibition season with an 86-48 win over the LSU-Alexandria Generals here at the Cajundome.

Redshirt freshman Danyale Bayonne lead the way with 16 points while senior Simone Fields scored 14 points along with adding nine rebounds.  Freshman Skyler Goodwin was 5 for 11 from the field and senior Troi Swain added 10 points of her own to help power the Cajuns to the 38-point victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED (First Quarter):  Fields scored the Cajuns' first points of the game putting back a rebound she snagged on the offensive end of the court.  But LSUA answered scoring the next two baskets to take a four-point lead.

The Cajuns worked the score to six all at the 7:16 point in the quarter thanks to a jumper in the paint from sophomore Kimberly Burton.  Both teams traded turnovers and two missed shots before LSUA took the lead 8-6 at the 4:15 mark in the quarter.

Louisiana responded to tie it but on the next possession LSUA again took the lead making It 10-8, as the quarter approached its finish.  A late basket from LSUA with seven seconds on the clock gave the Generals a 14-12 lead as the first quarter finished.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Quarter): The lead LSUA took into the second quarter was the last lead the Generals had all game as the Cajuns came out on fire to start the quarter.  Starting the quarter on a 4-0 run to take the lead at the 9:01 mark.

A layup from LSUA put the score at 17-16, but LSUA wouldn't get that close again, not only in the quarter but for the remainder of the game.

Louisiana then went on another run, this time tearing off a 9-0 run, to start to pull away.  Bayonne scored four of the Cajuns nine points in that run to put the Cajuns ahead 26-16 when the clock hit 6:10.

LSUA, not giving up easily, went on a run of their own, getting within three of the Cajuns, but two back-to-back baskets from Fields ended that run as the half neared its conclusion.  The Cajuns finished the half with a three-point shot from Swain and a jumper from Goodwin, nailed with three seconds left on the clock, to put the halftime score at 39-29.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Third Quarter): Louisiana came out of the locker room looking to build on their strong finish, and the first five minutes was evident of that.

They started the half on a 12-0 run, that LSUA finally ended at the 5:36 point in the third quarter.  But by then the Cajuns had extended their lead to 51-31 and they never looked back from there.

Sophomore Brittney Myles got into the action nailing two layups within a minute of each other, to give the Cajuns a 23-point lead as the clock hit 3:38.  That lead was extended even more when Louisiana finished the quarter on an 8-0 run, shooting 4 of 6 from the free throw line during the stretch.

When the quarter finished, the Cajuns had essentially put the game out of reach ending with a 31-point lead having outscored the Generals 27-6 during the 10-minute frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Fourth Quarter): The Cajuns added to their lead right away as the fourth quarter began with Fields nailing a layup pushing the score to 68-35 in favor of Louisiana.  Freshman Jomyra Mathis nailed a three-pointer at the 7:18 mark she then added a layup at 5:34 to put Louisiana up by 38 points with the score now at 75-37.

LSUA attempted to chip away at that lead, but any basket from the Generals was quickly answered by the Cajuns and at the 1:46 mark, with two free throws from Bayonne, the Cajuns took an 85-46 lead giving them a 40-point advantage, their biggest one of the night.

When the final horn blew, Louisiana sat up by 38 points, having again outscored LSUA in the quarter and the Cajuns finished with the 86-48 win over the Generals.

NOTEWORTHY:  Burton added eight rebounds to her seven points scored on the night; Mathis finished with seven points scoring all her baskets in the fourth quarter; Swain lead the Cajuns with five steals and two assists on the night.

The Cajuns shot 46 percent from the field while they held LSUA to 38 percent; Louisiana was a solid 38 percent from beyond the arc; The Cajuns forced LSUA to turn the ball over 30 times on the night; Louisiana outrebounded the Generals 42 to 30 and they were a force on the offensive board recording 17 to LSUA's seven.
