Louisiana will play the Toledo Rockets in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT.
LAFAYETTE – On Saturday, Nov. 18, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns will, for the first time in school history, take on the Toledo Rockets in the 2017 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament Consolation Round game with tip scheduled for 1 p.m. CST at the John F. Savage Arena in Toledo, Ohio.
          Â
The game will be the final game for the Cajuns in the Preseason WNIT, since they lost to the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies, 83-62, on Sunday, Nov. 12 in College Station, Texas. A win against the Rockets will give the Cajuns a 2-1 record in the tournament, in only their second ever Preseason WNIT appearance in school history.
RAGIN' CAJUNS IN THE PRESEASON WNIT: The Cajuns opened the Preseason WNIT at home with a matchup against the New Orleans Privateers on Nov. 10. Louisiana came out, and thanks to a second quarter where the Cajuns outscored the Privateers 24-7, won their first ever game in the Preseason WNIT 66-57 to move onto the second round.
          Â
They drew the Aggies in College Station, and they gave Texas A&M a scare playing the Aggies great through most of the game. After the first quarter the Cajuns had a 19-12 lead after causing six Texas A&M turnovers. And when halftime hit the Cajuns were only down by three with the score at 33-30.
          Â
In the end the Aggies pulled away to get the 83-62 win but Louisiana had proven they belong on the big stage, playing the Aggies tough on the road and they'll look to carry that momentum to Toledo for their game against the Rockets.
WHO'S LEADING THE CAJUNS SO FAR: Freshman Skyler Goodwin is off to a great start, the young guard who's taken the up the mantle of playing the point for the Cajuns, has scored 13 points in both games the Cajuns have played and her 13 points per game average is leading Louisiana. Goodwin is leading the Cajuns in three-point shooting percentage averaging 67 percent on 4-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
          Â
Senior Simone Fields, is off to a strong start as well, and she's averaging 12 points per game along with seven rebounds a game to lead the Cajuns in boards. Senior Nekia Jones has provided a spark for the Cajuns, coming off the bench in both games so far, she's averaging 7.5 points per game and she's tied for the lead in assists per game averaging three a game.
          Â
Redshirt freshman Danyale Bayonne, playing in her first real action for the Cajuns having suffered an injury in her first game last season, has joined Jones as a force off the bench. Bayonne is averaging 9.5 points per game and she's tied with Jones averaging three assists per game and she's shooting 46 percent from the field.  Â
HOW THE ROCKETS GOT HERE: Toledo opened the Preseason WNIT campaign at home hosting Saint Francis (Pa.) in their first-round matchup. The Rockets came away with a 74-66 win over the Red Flash punching their ticket into the second round.
          Â
In the second-round Toledo took on the No. 5 Louisville Cardinals in Louisville, Ky., and the Rockets fell 90-55 to move into the consolation round for the matchup against the Cajuns.
          Â
Toledo's offensive is led by two women averaging at least 15 points a game. Junior Kaayla McIntyre (15.5) and senior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott (15.0) are the two offensive threats for the Rockets and McIntyre is leading the Rockets in rebounds averaging 9.5 boards a game to highlight Toledo's offensive threats.
FIELDS SITS FOUR AWAY: With four points on Saturday, Fields will reach 1,000 points in her career. A career 54 percent shooter, a solid 2017-18 season from the senior forward should allow her to finish in the Cajuns top-10 all-time scoring list.
PRESEASON HONORS: Fields and sophomore Jasmine Thomas were both honored by the Sun Belt Conference before the season started by getting voted onto preseason teams. Fields was named to the Preseason All-Conference First Team and Thomas was named to the Preseason All-Conference Third Team giving the Cajuns two honorees heading into the season.
