Louisiana sinks school-record 16 3-pointers in wire-to-wire victory
LAFAYETTE – Senior Bryce Washington scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for his first double-double of the season while also becoming the 45th player in school history to score 1,000 points in a career as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team defeated Savannah State, 115-82, on Friday at the Cajundome.
Frank Bartley added 21 points as Louisiana (2-1) sank a school-record with 16 3-pointers in the contest. Freshman Cedric Russell scored 20 points for the Ragin' Cajuns, going 6-for-7 from behind the 3-point line, while JaKeenan Gant added 17 points and six rebounds.
Louisiana used a 17-6 run during the first half to pull away from a 13-10 lead as Washington opened the spurt with a three-point play. Russell connected on three straight 3-pointers over the Savannah State (1-3) defense that gave Louisiana a 25-12 lead before consecutive dunks by Gant extended Louisiana's lead to 29-12.
Washington, who finished 9-for-11 from the floor, converted on a bucket with 12:07 remaining to go over the 1,000-point mark and give Louisiana an 86-60 lead. The New Orleans, La., native and Gant combined to finish 17-for-21 from the floor against the Tigers defense with Russell going 7-for-11 from the floor.
Louisiana finished 42-for-78 (53.8 percent) from the floor while going 16-for-25 (45.7) percent from long range. Marcus Stroman dished out a career-high 11 assists for Louisiana with Malik Marquetti recording six.
Dexter McClanahan led Savannah State with 17 points on 6 of 10 aim from the floor with Alante Fenner adding 11.
Louisiana will return to action on Monday at 11 a.m. CST when it faces Iowa in the first game of the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic.
