The loss was the only match Louisiana played on the first day of the George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational
HAMMOND, La. – Louisiana's women's tennis team lost their first match of the weekend, 4-1, to Southeastern Louisiana on the first day of the George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational here in Hammond.
The dual-match was decided in a five-match format, with three singles and two doubles being played. Each match, both singles and doubles represented a point towards the total match points.
Louisiana's sole win on the day came in doubles when the senior pairing of Kelly Drew and Abby Johnson took down the SLU duo of Dalina Dahlmans and Ximena Yanez 7-5, 6-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Freshman Floriane Picaut lost her match in a close contest against Ceci Mercier falling in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), but the young Cajuns woman put up a strong effort.
After losing the first set, she fought hard in her attempts to force a third set, falling short of that goal after forcing the match to a tiebreaker where she lost that few points to drop the second set and the match.
Cajuns sophomore Marina Rodriguez Garcia's match against Katya Cornejo went to a third set tiebreaker and in the end Garcia lost, 5-7, 6-3, 10-4. Garcia won the first set 7-5, but Cornejo came out and took the second set 6-3 to force a third set tiebreaker.
In that breaker, Cornejo took control of the match and Garcia couldn't cut the deficit as she lost 10-4 to drop the third set breaker and the match.
Louisiana freshman Morgan Forshag lost her singles match in another three-set marathon, falling to SLU's Dany Raygadas 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. Much like her sophomore teammate, Forshag won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 3-6.
In the third set tiebreaker, Forshag fell behind and couldn't catch up with Raygadas in the breaker losing 10-5 to lose the set and the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Drew and Johnson gave the Cajuns their first and only win on the day with a straight set win against Dahlmans and Yanez, 7-5, 6-4.
Drew and Johnson worked hard to maintain their lead through the first set holding off a late charge from the SLU duo to win the first set 7-5. In the second set the Cajuns pairing didn't let the SLU pair get into the set and the Louisiana grouping won the second set 6-4 to finish off the Cajuns first win on the day.
In the other doubles match Louisiana's pair of senior Elena Sava and freshman Dana Radovanovic fell in straight sets to the SLU duo of Fleur Holtkamp and Jiva de Veer 7-5, 6-2.
UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: The Ragin' Cajuns' will look to bounce back as they return to the court tomorrow on Saturday, Nov. 4 for two dual matches. They'll first take on Alcorn State starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by a second match later in the day against McNeese which starts at 1:30 p.m.
