Women's Basketball Signs Three For The 2018-19 Season

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team and head coach Garry Brodhead had a busy past two days signing three new women to a National Letter of Intent for the 2018 season.

Signing with the Ragin' Cajuns is Andrea Cournoyer (Merryville, La./Merryville HS), Brandi Williams (Lake Charles, La./Barbe HS) and Diamond Morrison (East View HS/Georgetown, Texas).  All three women are guards and they'll look to bolster the Cajuns backcourt starting next season.

"We are excited about this 2018 signing class," said Brodhead.  "They each bring everything we're looking for in a player.  We expect all three women to make an immediate impact on our program."

ANDREA COURNOYER: Cournoyer brings quite the resume to Louisiana, a 5-4 point guard, she's started at Merryville High School since sixth grade and she's got a great chance to become only the eight player in U.S. women's basketball history to score over 5,000 career points.

Last season she averaged 34.7 points per game, and her 265 steals was the sixth highest single season total in NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) history.  And she's been named All-State five time along with being a 2-time State 1A MVP.

"Andrea brings a very high basketball IQ," said Brodhead.  "Her ability to score as well as run the point guard position makes her a perfect fit for the system we run here at Louisiana."

BRANDI WILLIAMS: Williams, a 5-6 shooting guard with a quick release, helped lead Barbe High School team to a 33-4 2016-17 season.  Williams averaged 16.1 points per game in the 2016-17 season as Barbe had an undefeated season in 5A District 3 making a deep run in the Louisiana 5A State Playoffs losing in the championship game.

"Brandi is great scoring guard that also fits our philosophy," said Brodhead.  "The way she can run the floor will help us improve almost immediately."

DIAMOND MORRISON: Morrison, who's a 5-7 guard, brings size and athleticism to the Cajuns.  She'll be expected to play the wings for the Cajuns providing another option for Louisiana's post players to kick the ball out to.

She helped East View High School to a solid 6-4 record on the road, as she averaged 17 points per game and led her team in steals.  She did this playing a tough Texas school filled schedule and that toughness should translate well to what coach Brodhead wants from his teams.

"Diamond is a combo guard," said Brodhead.  "She brings the ability to score but she's got the ability to run as well, which is important in the style that we play here."

CAJUNS TIPPING OFF 2017: The Cajuns tip-off their season on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. as they host the New Orleans Privateers at the Cajundome in the first round of the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament.
