LAFAYETTE – No. 11 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball staged a pair of late-inning comebacks to capture wins over DePaul and Ball State on Saturday in the 31st Annual Louisiana Classics at Lamson Park.
Daniella Chavez delivered a two-run RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Ragin' Cajuns to a walk-off 4-3 win over DePaul in the opener.
Kelli Martinez fueled a four-run sixth inning with a two-run single as Louisiana erased a 3-1 deficit in the sixth inning of the nightcap against Ball State. DJ Sanders put the exclamation point on the comeback with a two-run home run in the seventh inning and the Ragin' Cajuns claimed a 7-4 triumph.
The sweep kept the Ragin' Cajuns perfect for the weekend, improving the squad's mark to 4-0.
Louisiana closes out its season-opening weekend and the Louisiana Classics with two games against Southern Miss scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Louisiana vs. DePaul
Redshirt freshman Summer Ellyson made her collegiate debut in the pitching circle and engaged in a pitcher's duel with Blue Demons starter Missy Zoch with each swapping zeros through the first three innings.
Ellyson posted a fourth consecutive scoreless frame and was provided the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jaime Landry.
DePaul forged a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Alysia Rodriguez, then added single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to lay claim to a 3-1 lead.
Louisiana broke through against Blue Demons reliever Kennedy Garcia in the bottom of the seventh. Haley Hayden doubled home Martinez for the first run of the frame. Aleah Craighton walked, Hayden advanced to third on a wild pitch and a Sanders grounder moved Craighton to second base giving the Ragin' Cajuns two in scoring position.
Down to the final out, Chavez shoved a single back up the middle sending Hayden home and Craighton rounding around the third base bag and into home just underneath the throw home for the winning run.
Alex Stewart picked up the win in relief. She entered in the fifth inning after Garcia's home run put the Blue Demons on the board.
Louisiana vs. Ball State
Ball State grabbed an early lead by picking up three runs off back-to-back home runs from Danae King (two-run) and Amanda Arnett (solo) off of Kylee Jo Trahan in the second inning.
It remained a 3-0 Ball State lead through four complete as starting pitcher Carolyn Wilmes escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third inning.
The Ragin' Cajuns scratched a run in the fifth inning as Martinez reached on an error, advanced to second on a walk, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Hayden.
Louisiana loaded the bases via walks in the sixth inning and tied the contest when Martinez slapped a single down the left field line. Kara Gremillion followed with another two-out hit, lifting a single out of the reach of the Cardinals infield and two additional runs scored for a 5-3 edge.
Ball State plated an unearned run in the sixth inning to trim the deficit to a single run, but Sanders answered with her two-run blast in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-4 and provide Macey Smith more breathing room.
Smith tossed 5-1/3 innings of relief for Louisiana, holding Ball State to one run and three hits after the Cardinals grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
