Washington, Wright Leads Louisiana Past South Alabama

Wright scores eight to join 1,000-club; Washington notches 19th double-double of season
LAFAYETTE – Bryce Washington recorded his 19th double-double of the season, senior Jay Wright became the 44th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns snapped a four-game losing skid with an impressive 87-61 win over South Alabama on Monday at the Cajundome.

Frank Bartley added 10 points while reserve post player Larenz Stalcup scored eight points, grabbed a season-high nine rebounds and blocked a season-best four shots as Louisiana (15-11, 5-8 SBC) built a 37-28 lead at halftime and all 12 players who dressed got into the scoring column.

Washington, who grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, tied a career-high with 25 points as the junior as the Ragin' Cajuns limited South Alabama to 34 percent (22-for-65) from the floor and 1-for-15 from behind the 3-point line.

Louisiana never trailed after Wright buried a 3-pointer from the left wing, giving the Ragin' Cajuns a 10-7 lead with 14:03 remaining in the first half. The senior would eventually give Louisiana a 28-18 lead at the 5:19 mark in the first half after sinking the second of two free throws before reaching the 1,000-point career mark with 14:38 remaining when he made the first of two free throws.

South Alabama got as close as 37-30 when Don MuepoKelly scored on a layup on the Jaguars' opening possession, but Louisiana would respond with a 12-2 run as Stalcup sank a pair of free throws to open the spurt with Bartley converting on a three-point play with 16:09 remaining for a 49-32 lead.

Kadavion Evans and P.J. Hardy would each sink 3-pointers during a 10-2 run that would eventually give Louisiana a 70-49 lead with 7:36 left. The Ragin' Cajuns stretched their lead to 80-54 with 4:17 remaining after Stalcup altered a dunk attempt by MuepoKelly and followed it up on the other end of the floor with an uncontested dunk of his own.

Nick Stover came off the bench to score 14 points to lead South Alabama with MuepoKelly and Ken Williams scoring 11 points each. Louisiana held a 47-32 advantage on the glass and finished 30-for-59 (51 percent) from the floor.
