Wright ties career-high with 28 points as Cajuns post first win in Monroe since 2013
MONROE – The play at the end of Saturday's game at ULM was supposed to go to Louisiana's Jay Wright.
After Rodrick Taylor missed two free throws with 3.8 seconds left, Stove dribbled up the court and drained a half-court buzzer beater to lead Louisiana to a dramatic 85-84 win over the Warhawks in a Sun Belt Conference game at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Wright tied a career-high with 28 points for Louisiana (16-11, 6-8 SBC), going 10-for-19 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers. Stove, who was 8-for-33 (24.2 percent) from behind the 3-point line entering the game, finished with 17 points on 6 of 9 aim from the floor.
Louisiana, which earned its first win in Monroe since a 71-63 victory on March 2, 2013, mounted a final comeback after trailing by nine points with 3:01 remaining and 84-79 with 12 seconds left after Jordan Harris scored on a layup.
Kadavion Evans tipped in a missed 3-pointer by Jerekius Davis and converted a three-point play with 3.8 seconds remaining that cut ULM's lead to 84-82. Taylor, who was fouled immediately by the Cajuns, was sent to the free throw line where he missed both shots, giving Louisiana a chance at the win.
Stove got the ball off a rebound from Davis, dribbled three times up court and launched a shot from just inside midcourt for his game-winner.
Louisiana opened the game on a 10-2 run as Frank Bartley and Justin Miller each scored three points with Wright and Stove adding a bucket each. ULM (7-20, 1-13 SBC) took its first lead of the game on a Nick Coppola layup with 6:41 remaining in the half before stretching its lead to 32-25 at halftime after a bucket by Marvin Jean-Pierre.
The Ragin' Cajuns forged a 39-39 tie with 15:13 remaining after Bartley scored off a ULM turnover, but the Warhawks would push the lead go 47-39 behind a pair of buckets by Prince Cooper, a bucket by Sam Alabakis and a layup by Jean-Pierre.
Miller scored 12 points for Louisiana, which scored a season-high 60 points in the second half and finished 21-for-33 (63.6 percent) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Bryce Washington, who was held to two points and five rebounds, dished out four assists for the Ragin' Cajuns with Miller pulling down a game-high seven rebounds.
Cooper, who entered the game averaging 2.8 points per game, scored a team-high 17 off the bench to lead ULM with Jean-Pierre adding 14. Coppola had 13 points and five assists for the Warhawks with Sam McDaniel and Travis Munnings scoring 11 points each.
Louisiana will return to action on Saturday (Feb. 25) when it faces Coastal Carolina in a 3:30 p.m. CT contest in Conway, S.C.
