MOBILE, Ala. – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns senior golfer Fernando Cruz Valle carded an opening round 66 (-6) to finish the first day of the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in a tie for third with a 36-hole score of 4-under par (140) on Monday at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
Â
"Very happy and pleased with Fernando's approach and focus," head coach Theo Sliman said. "He learned a lot in today's second round on how to handle having the lead. He has a great opportunity tomorrow and is playing very well. Patience will be his key in tomorrow's difficult weather."
Â
The round of 66 is a season-low for Cruz Valle who had six birdies and an eagle in the first 18 holes. Cruz Valle is two strokes back of Georgia State's Alexander Herrmann for the individual lead. Hermann notched a round of 67 (-5) in the second round to climb to the top of the leaderboard at 6-under (138).
Â
As a team, Louisiana finished the day in 12th with a 36-hole score of 14-over (590). Host South Alabama leads the field with a two-round score of 11-under (565). Louisville (-9, 567), Mississippi State (-5, 571), Georgia State (-4, 572) and Chattanooga (-2, 574) round out the top 5 teams.
Â
"Today was a frustrating result by the collective group, and not the way we expected to start the spring season," Sliman said. "We can't expect to compete with two or three guys posting rounds. In order for us to be the competitive program that we need to be, we will have to have more consistency from all five players. The team got slapped in the face today, and we need to expect more out of ourselves. I am very anxious to see how tough we respond to today's poor performance."
Â
Senior Thomas Strandemo finished the day in a tie for 46th at 5-over (149), while freshman Aron Juliusson is two strokes back in a tie for 56th. Ryan Desormeaux (62nd, +10) and Ragnar Gardarsson (65th, +11) round out the scoring for Louisiana.
Â
The Cajuns are paired with West Virginia and Western Kentucky for the final round. Play gets underway at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
Â
In the USA Individual Tournament, sophomore Triston Elston is tied for 9th with a two-round score of 4-over (146).
Â
Following the final round of the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, Louisiana heads home for the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics hosted at Oakbourne
