Louisiana back home on Saturday to face Troy in ESPN3 contest

STATESBORO, Ga. – Mike Hughes scored six of his game-high 20 points in a 45-second span late in the second half to erase a late deficit and help Georgia Southern earn a 74-70 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in a Sun Belt Conference men's basketball game on Monday at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Ike Smith scored 18 points and Tookie Brown 11 as Georgia Southern (16-8, 9-2 SBC) built a 15-point lead in the first half before Louisiana (14-10, 4-7 SBC) used a 15-2 run over the final 2:24 to close to within 40-38 at halftime.

Louisiana kept up its momentum, opening the second half with a 3-pointer by Jay Wright and a three-point play by Bryce Washington that gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 44-40 lead with 17:53 remaining. Georgia Southern would briefly retake the lead, 45-44, after a 3-pointer by Jake Allsmiller before freshman Justin Miller would score the next seven points giving Louisiana a 51-45 lead at the 14:46 mark.

Miller, who scored a team-high 18 points, gave Louisiana its biggest lead of the night, 54-47, with a 3-pointer with 13:13 remaining, and the Ragin' Cajuns would hold onto the lead until a three-point play by Ike Smith with 3:14 left gave the Eagles a 63-62 advantage.

Wright, a Rincon, Ga., native who was playing less than an hour from his hometown, put Louisiana ahead, 64-63, with a jumper at the 3:00-mark and Miller would help the Ragin' Cajuns retake the lead, 66-65, with a pair of free throws with 2:17 remaining.

Georgia Southern, which remained in a three-way tie with Arkansas State and Georgia State for the SBC lead, took the lead for good when Hughes connected on a 3-pointer for a 68-66 lead with 2:02 left.

Hughes made up for a turnover on the ensuing possession for the Eagles after Wright missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 with 1:41 left. After his turnover in the lane was snagged by Jerekius Davis, Hughes snuck behind Davis and converted a three-point play for a 71-66 lead with 1:17 remaining.

Brown hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining giving Georgia Southern a 73-70 lead and Smith added an insurance free throw with six seconds remaining to preserve the victory.

Wright added 17 points and five assists for Louisiana while Frank Bartley scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Washington scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to notch his 18th double-double of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns, second among Division I players behind Purdue's Caleb Swanigan (20).

Louisiana will return to action on Saturday (Feb. 11) when it plays host to Troy in a 7:15 p.m. contest at the Cajundome. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
