Cajuns don pads for first time in spring drills, receives proclamation for community service
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team took advantage of cool weather on Tuesday as it opened its second week of spring practice, holding a two-hour workout in pads at the Ragin' Cajuns Practice Facility.
The Ragin' Cajuns, coming off a fifth bowl appearance in the past six years, continued work on its offensive and defensive packages. Quarterbacks Jordan Davis, Dion Ray, Andre Nunez and Jake Arceneaux each had turns directing the offense in 11-on-11 drills with newcomer Karson Block picking off a deflected pass in team drills.
"I thought defensively, we really improved in running to the football, flying around the ball and working on creating turnovers," said head coach Mark Hudspeth, "and we've seen a big difference these first three practices.
"It was the first day in pads … and the pads tell a different story. We had some guys who really stood out and we've got some guys didn't look quite as good as they may have just in helmets. It's still early and some kids are going to get a lot of reps, so hopefully they can mature a little bit in this extra work that they're going to get."
Prior to practice, the Ragin' Cajuns received a proclamation from Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Joel Robideaux for their work in the community during last year's flooding and for work in the community. The Ragin' Cajuns were also greeted by new Director of Athletics Bryan Maggard, who joined Robideaux in recognizing the team's effort in the community.
"It's (community service) incredible," Robideaux said. "The people that they are helping recognize it and it just shows to them, and reinforces how we feel about ourselves … that we're all willing to help other and that we're good neighbors and good friends.
"And to have the (Ragin' Cajuns) football team doing it, I think it shows to the younger generation that everyone needs to get involved. It's fantastic that they're willing to do that."
Louisiana will return to action on Thursday (March 16) when it works out at 3:50 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns will hold their annual Red-White Spring Game on April 8 and will open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana.
The renewal process for Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football season tickets is currently underway and fans are encouraged to renew their tickets for the 2017 season by April 17.
