Throwers Record Big Performances For Cajuns At Louisiana Classics

Competition starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday
LAFAYETTE – Bartul Basic, Richard Delphin and freshman Claire Meyers each turned in second-place finishes to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team after the first day of the 2017 Louisiana Classics on Friday at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.
Competition continues on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with field events before running events start at 2 p.m. Live results will be available at RaginCajuns.com. A live video stream (free) is also available at RaginCajuns.com.
Basic, the defending Sun Belt Conference champion in the men's javelin, posted a throw of 219-5 to finish second behind McNeese State's Donovan Banks (222-2). Hunter Stelly finished sixth overall for the Ragin' Cajuns (199-6) with Josh Cecil finishing ninth (189-8).
Meyers, competing in her second career collegiate meet, posted a throw of 139-11 to finish second for the Ragin' Cajuns with Chelcie Sonnier (132-3) finishing fourth and Madison Meche (130-10) fifth.
Delphin earned a second-place finish for Louisiana in the men's hammer throw posting a throw of 172-7 with Landon Carroll finishing third (165-4). Amie Leitko earned a seventh-place finish in the women's hammer throw for the Ragin' Cajuns (158-1) with Kayla Thompson finishing seventh overall in the women's 200-meter dash (25.11).
In the men's 1,500-meters, Matt Rice finished fourth with a time of 3:54.27 with Stanley Limoh (3:54.96) finishing fifth, Christian Bergeron eighth (4:04.07) and Logan LaGarde 10th (4:07.15).
Meredith Driskell earned a third-place finish in the women's pole vault for Louisiana, clearing the bar at a season-best 12-5 ½ with Alexa Johnson finishing sixth (12-5 ½). Former Ragin' Cajuns All-American Morgann Leleux claimed the event as she set a stadium record in the women's pole vault, clearing the bar at 15-1 ½, besting her previous record (14-9 ½) set at last year's Sun Belt Conference Championships.
In the men's 10,000-meter run, 45-year-old Kevin Castille of Lafayette, running unattached, set a Masters Track World Record with a time of 29:44.38. The previous record (30:02.56) was set by Mexico's Antonio Villanueva on Nov. 27, 1987 at the WAVA Championships in Melbourne, Australia.
