Â
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Freshman Aron Juliusson bounced back from a slow start in the first round Monday morning to card a 68 (-4) and finish the first day of the Lone Star Invitational in a tie for 26th at 1-under (143) at the par-72, 7,247-yard Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
Â
Juliusson had just one blemish on his card in the second round posting five birdies including two in the final three holes. The Gardabaer, Iceland native has posted seven rounds of par or better this year including five rounds in the 60s.
Â
"It was nice to see Aron and the guys bounce back after the start that we got off to," head coach Theo Sliman said. "It was nice to see the toughness and guts from the guys to hang in there and fight. Hopefully we can clean up some unforced errors as this team has the chance to put together a really low round."
Â
The Cajuns finished the day in a tie with Little Rock for seventh with a two-round score of 3-under (573). Louisiana bounced back from a first round score of 1-over to card a round of 4-under in the afternoon with three players recording a round of par or better.
Â
No. 7 Illinois leads the field with a 36-hole score of 27-under (549). No. 15 Oklahoma (-19, 557), UTEP (-19, 557), UTSA (-17, 559) and Mississippi State (-14, 562) round out the top 5 teams.
Â
Oklahoma's Max McGreevy sits atop the individual leaderboard at 12-under (132) after posting a tournament record 63 (-9) in the second round.
Â
Fernando Cruz Valle and Triston Elston sit one stroke back of Juliusson in a tie for 31st at even-par (144). Elston also carded a round under par in the second round tallying a 71 (-1) with two birdies in his last five holes of the day.
Â
Thomas Strandemo is one shot back of Cruz Valle and Elston in a tie for 38th at 1-over (145), while Ragnar Gardarsson sits in a tie for 48th at 2-over (146).
Â
"We are excited for the opportunity tomorrow," Sliman said. "We have a leaderboard to climb and the top 5 is still within our sights with the way the course is playing. The rest of this season is preparation for conference play. We need to learn how to finish out tournaments strong so that we can be ready come April when postseason play is on the line."
