Cajuns continue installation of offensive, defensive packages; Brooks looking to see playing time in secondary

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team held a light workout for veterans on Thursday with redshirts and newcomers getting extra individual work during the team's seventh workout of spring practice on Thursday at the Ragin' Cajuns Practice Facility.

The Ragin' Cajuns spent two hours on the field in ideal conditions as they continued the installation of their offensive and defensive packages. Two days after holding its first scrimmage of the spring, head coach Mark Hudspeth was pleased with the team's effort in the 75-play situational workout.

"The wideouts performed like we thought they could," Hudspeth said of the Ragin' Cajuns receiving trio of Keenan Barnes, Michael Jacquet and Ja'Marcus Bradley. "They all made big catches and had big plays. I thought our quarterbacks threw the ball well and offensive line-wise, I think our starting five is really good. We just need to create a little more depth."

With a number of players on the defensive side being held out of spring practice due to recovering from injury, the Ragin' Cajuns had several players step up with sophomore defensive back Blair Brooks earning the most praise from the coaching staff.

"One of the guys who stood out on Tuesday and during spring camp has been Blair Brooks," Hudspeth said. "He's made a lot of progress. He's long (6-foot-3) and covers well. He's been getting better each day and showing us that he can provide some immediate help. He is one of the guys who has stood out the most.

"There are some other ones who have stood out as well. The biggest thing is that there have been so many players, defensively, not practicing due to injury. We're missing those guys, but the positive thing is that they will have the opportunity to get them back on June 1."

Louisiana will return to action on Saturday (March 25) when it works out at 9:50 a.m. The Ragin' Cajuns will hold their annual Red-White Spring Game on April 8 at noon and will open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 at Cajun Field against Southeastern Louisiana.
