Louisiana Rally Falls Short In 7-5 Defeat At Troy

3/25/2017 4:52:00 PM | Baseball

TROY, Ala. – The 15th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth but saw its comeback bid come up short with the tying run on first base as the Cajuns fell 7-5 to Troy on Saturday to even the series at Riddle-Pace Field.

"We had a chance to get off of the field and we didn't turn the double play," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We wanted those runs late to mean something. When you don't get that double play turned over, you hand the momentum back to them. We didn't lose just because of the missed double play. We also struck out too many times and took too long to get back into this one."

Troy (13-9, 3-2 Sun Belt) starter Austin Crook rebounded from a sluggish first inning to allow four runs (two earned) on four hits with a career-high 14 strikeouts and five walks in 8.2 innings to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Sophomore Nick Lee took his second straight loss of the season for Louisiana (12-9, 3-2 Sun Belt) after surrendering four runs on four hits with four walks and a strikeout in 2.1 innings of work.

Senior Jevin Huval posted a strong effort out of the bullpen tossing 4.2 shutout innings scattering three hits with two walks and a strikeout.

"Jevin did a great job for us," Robichaux said. "Anytime when they (relievers) come in and we are behind, we want them to make their innings relevant. What he did was outstanding. He kept us in the game for as long as he could, and we just didn't take advantage of that opportunity."

Offensively, the Trojans outhit the Cajuns 9-6 led by second baseman Brandon Lockridge who went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and scored a run. Third baseman Joe Robbins led Louisiana going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

The Ragin' Cajuns jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of RBI singles by right fielder Steven Sensley and designated hitter Tremaine Spears.

The Trojans cut into the lead in the bottom of the second when designated hitter Joey Denison scored on a fielder's choice ground ball hit to first by centerfielder Steven Whitaker.

Troy grabbed a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the third plating three runs on three hits and three walks. Lockridge scored on a Lee wild pitch after doubling with one out and then moved to third on a Trevor Davis single. Later in the inning, Denison delivered a bases-loaded RBI single through the right side of the infield to put the Trojans in front 3-2. Left fielder Mack Hathcock brought home the final run of the inning on a bases-loaded walk.

After four scoreless innings, Troy added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth after an error by second baseman Brenn Conrad would have led to an inning ending double play. Frederic drove in the first run of the inning singling home Hathcock on a ball hit to right field. Lockridge singled to centerfield to plate two more runs and give the Trojans a 7-2 lead.

Louisiana rallied in the top of the ninth loading the bases with two outs. Robbins drove a 3-2 pitch from reliever Lance Johnson into the gap in right center for a double to clear the bases and pull the Cajuns within two runs at 7-5. Following an infield single by Kennon Fontenot that put the tying run on for the Ragin' Cajuns, closer Marc Skinner got first baseman Alex Pinero to go down swinging to end the contest and pick up his sixth save of the year.

The Cajuns and Trojans are slated to close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Sophomore left-hander Hogan Harris (1-0, 0.60) will take the mound for Louisiana who is looking to win its fifth straight series. Troy will counter with senior left-hander Evan Hebert (1-0, 3.38 ERA).
