Cajuns open fourth week of camp; offense continues to make improvement
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team kicked off its fourth week of spring practice on Monday, holding a two-hour workout in full gear at the Ragin' Cajuns Practice Facility.
Â
Louisiana, which held its ninth of 15 practices during the spring, continued the installation of its offensive and defensive packages with fundamental work on special teams. The Ragin' Cajuns capped off the 20-period practice with the two-minute drill with quarterbacks Jordan Davis and Andre Nunez each engineering scoring drives.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns offense, looking to replace starters in quarterback Anthony Jennings, running back Elijah McGuire and receiver Al Riles, continued to make strides under new offensive coordinator Will Hall.
Â
Davis, a fourth-year junior, Nunez, Dion Ray and redshirt freshman Jake Arceneaux have each directed the Ragin' Cajuns offense during the spring with running backs Darius Hoggins, Jordan Wright and Trey Ragas looking to replace McGuire.
Â
"One of the biggest improvements this spring is the way the offense has come together in three-and-half weeks," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "Any time you're putting in a new scheme, there are a lot of moving parts and a lot of players trying to get in the right spots. We've had to play musical chairs a little bit with the offensive line to get those guys in the right area … especially with a few guys not out there.
Â
"I think they've picked it up pretty quickly. Jordan Davis has made a lot of progress along with Andre Nunez. That (offense) was the area we needed to see improvement. It's not a finished product, we have a lot of work left to do, but I really think we're off to a good start and the kids have a good grasp up to now."
Â
One of the expected strengths for Louisiana on offense in 2017 will be on the offensive line where four starters return. On the outside, tackles D'Aquin Withrow and Grant Horst provide veteran leadership with sophomore guards Robert Hunt and Kevin Dotson getting set to build off successful campaigns in 2016.
Â
Along with Hunt and Dotson, Louisiana had several young players make contributions last season including receivers Keenan Barnes, Ja'Marcus Bradley and Michael Jacquet, defensive lineman Joe Dillon and defensive back Demar'ren Mitchell.
Â
"Both our guards last year were freshmen and Kevin Dotson was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Newcomer Team," Hudspeth said. "We've got such quality young guys that are playing a lot of snaps. Some of our top players are just starting to play. That's when you feel like you've got a chance to really get on a run and see improvement from year to year with so many young guys making big impacts on each side of the ball."
Â
Louisiana will return to action on Thursday (March 30) when it works out at 3:20 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns will hold their annual Red-White Spring Game on April 8 at noon and will open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 at Cajun Field against Southeastern Louisiana.
Â
The renewal process for Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football season tickets is currently underway and fans are encouraged to renew their tickets for the 2017 season by April 17.
