Ragin' Cajuns honor local first responders during two-hour workout

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team held its second workout of spring drills on Thursday, spending nearly two hours in helmets while honoring local first responders at the Ragin' Cajuns Practice Fields.

Louisiana, which earned its fifth bowl trip in the last six seasons, continued work in the installation of its offensive and defensive packages, along with work on special teams fundamentals.

"Anytime you can get out on the grass during the springtime and sunshine, it's always a great day," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "I'm really proud of the way the guys continue to come to practice, with a lot of energy and juice. Just to see their work ethic right now and the way they're picking up things, especially with the new offense with all of the installation is really encouraging.

"Defensively, we have a chance to go back and refine some stuff. It's really been a very good first couple of days."

During 11-on-11 drills, each of the Ragin' Cajuns four quarterbacks – Jordan Davis, Dion Ray, Jake Arceneaux and Andre Nunez – took snaps with linebacker Shay LaPorte keying the defense with an interception off a tipped pass.

Prior to its 22-period workout, the Ragin' Cajuns honored members of the five agencies in the Lafayette area, including Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mark Garber, UL Police Chief Joey Sturm, Lafayette City Marshal Brian Pope, Lafayette Police Deputy Chief Reggie Thomas and Lafayette Fire Deputy Chief Leonard Blackwell.

"I'm really impressed and proud UL and culture that the coaches are trying to create here by promoting an ethos of servant leadership," Garber said of the Ragin' Cajuns work in the community. "The true warrior type mentality is that you serve your people and every student-athlete is a leader in their own right.

"They're being put in an elevated position by their peers, by their community. To teach them some accountability and create a culture of servant leadership and community involvement is a tremendous accolade to the coaching staff."

Louisiana will return to action on Tuesday (March 14) when it works out at 3:50 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns will hold their annual Red-White Spring Game on April 8 and will open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana.
