South Alabama Blanks Louisiana Baseball To Even Series

4/1/2017 9:28:00 PM | Baseball

LAFAYETTE, La. – The 21st-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team was shutout for the second time this season at home as the Cajuns fell 6-0 to South Alabama Saturday night to even the series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

The Ragin' Cajuns (15-12, 5-3 Sun Belt) and Jaguars (16-11, 6-2 Sun Belt) close out the series with the rubber match on Sunday at 11 a.m. as the game was moved up due to impending weather.

"Lefties like we faced tonight have had our number all year long," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We have to do better against that kind of arm. They got one big lick and that's what really separated them from us in this ballgame. As a pitching staff, we needed to go out there and hang zeros knowing that we weren't going to score a lot of runs, and we didn't do that."

Sophomore Nick Lee (4-3) was handed his third straight loss of the year after giving up four runs on six hits in four innings of work. Lee walked four and had three strikeouts in the outing.

Jaguars starter Thomas Huston (3-1) limited the Ragin' Cajuns to three hits tossing seven scoreless innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Cajuns were outhit 9-3 in the contest. Shortstop Drew LaBounty led the way for the Jags going 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run.

South Alabama scored first in the top of the second when third baseman Will Luft doubled to right center to score Eddie Paparella from first base to give the Jags a 1-0 edge. USA went on to load the bases with two outs, but Lee got left fielder Brendan Donovan to line out to centerfield to end the threat.

The Jaguars extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth plating three runs on three hits. LaBounty led off the inning with a solo home run to left field to make the score 2-0. South Alabama picked up the other two runs in the inning on sacrifice flies by Wells Davis and Paparella.

The Cajuns best threat of the game came in the bottom half of the fifth as Ishmael Edwards tripled off of the wall in centerfield with two outs, but Huston got Brenn Conrad to fly out to center to end the inning.

South Alabama put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth on a two-run single to left centerfield by Donovan to make the final 6-0. Louisiana had just two runners reach base in the final four frames.
