Weather Suspends Round Two of SBC Golf Championship

MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team finished the first day of the 2017 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship in eighth place with an 18-hole score of 12-over par (296) on Sunday at the par-71, 6,900-yard course Raven Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

Weather caused a delay that neared four hours during the first round that ended up causing the second round to be suspended due to darkness with most teams halfway through the round.

"It's been a challenge for the whole field this first day with a long rain delay," head coach Theo Sliman said. "The weather and the delay have tested the field mentally and the scores you see on the leaderboard show just that. We've played a mediocre couple of rounds, but we still find ourselves within reach of the top 4 in stroke play. Hopefully we can take advantage of the opportunity afforded us tomorrow."

Georgia State is the leader after the first round with a score of 6-under (278), while Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk sits atop the individual leaderboard with a 66 (-5) in the first round.

After getting off to a slow start in the opening round, senior Fernando Cruz Valle got off to a strong start in the second round with four birdies in the first nine holes before play was halted.

"I am very pleased to see the bounce back from our leader Fernando in the second round," Sliman said. "We really need this senior laden group to play with some urgency tomorrow if they want to see their careers to continue."

The Cajuns will continue to be paired with Coastal Carolina and Little Rock for the completion of the second round and the third round. Play will resume at 7:30 a.m. with live scoring available on Golfstat.com.
