Â
WEST POINT, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team ended the rain-shortened first day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in a tie for 13th after notching a round of 10-over par (298) on a wet Monday at the par-72, 7,088-yard Old Waverly Golf Course.
Â
"This was a pretty disappointing day with a lot of mediocre play," head coach Theo Sliman said. "I expect more from an experienced group like this with three seniors in the lineup. The positive thing is that this is a very tight leaderboard, which gives us a chance to make a move in the final round. We need a collective team effort if we want to make a move tomorrow."
Â
The Cajuns are tied with Memphis and South Alabama as the tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to the weather. South Florida and Kennesaw State are tied for the team lead at 5-under (283). Lipscomb (-4, 284), Mississippi State (+1, 289) and Chattanooga (+1, 289) round out the top 5 teams.
Â
Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong and Kennesaw State's Chris Guglielmo are tied for the individual lead after carding a score of 7-under (65) in the first round.
Â
Freshman Aron Juliusson paces Louisiana in a tie for 24th at 1-over (73) with three birdies on the day.
Â
"Hopefully Aron can have another good round to bolster his accomplishments in his freshman campaign," Sliman said. "He is in the running for freshman of the year in our conference, and another good showing would go a long way to help his cause for the honor."
Â
Fernando Cruz Valle, Thomas Strandemo, Ragnar Gardarsson and Triston Elston are all tied for 47th at 3-over (75) heading into the final round.
Â
Play gets underway tomorrow at 9 a.m. with teams starting off of holes one and ten. The Ragin' Cajuns are paired with Rice, Southeastern Louisiana and South Alabama in the final round and will start off of hole ten starting at 9 a.m. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
