Cajuns finish 1-2 in men's javelin to trail first-day leader South Alabama

ARLINGTON, Texas – Junior Bartul Basic led from wire-to-wire in the men's javelin, recording a mark of 223 feet, 8 inches on his final attempt and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's track and field team used a 1-2 effort in the event to finish in second place after the first day of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Maverick Stadium.

Junior Franz Beyer opened defense of his 2016 men's decathlon title as he led after the first day with 3,563 points while Richard Delphin and Landon Carroll finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the men's hammer throw.

Louisiana scored 23 points through three events to trail South Alabama (28) after the first day. Host UT Arlington (16), Arkansas State (12) and Troy (12) rounded out the top five. The Ragin' Cajuns women's team, which was bolstered by a fourth-place finish by Claire Meyers in the women's javelin, was tied for sixth place after the first day with nine points.

Second day action will begin at 9 a.m., with the completion of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. The women's long jump will start at 11:30 a.m. with competition in the women's shot put, women's high jump and men's long jump set for 3 p.m.

Basic, ranked 20th nationally in the javelin entering the meet, took control of the event after posting a throw of 216-7 on his first attempt. He added a throw of 217-9 on his second attempt before passing on his next two throws and coming back with a mark of 217-10 in the fifth round. Teammate Hunter Stelly finished second in the event for the Ragin' Cajuns after his throw of 208-8 on his final attempt helped him leapfrog from fifth place.

Beyer overcame a slow start in the decathlon after finishing ninth overall in the 100-meter dash (11.80). The multi-athlete climbed up the standings with a fourth-place performance in the long jump (21-9), a second-place finish in the shot put (43-5 ¾) and a first-place performance in the high jump (6-7) and a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (53.75) to build a 75-point lead over Arkansas State's Hayden Hampton.

Meyers recorded a throw of 143-1 on her second attempt of the day to lead Louisiana while Madison Meche finished sixth overall with a personal-best throw of 138-3. Alexa Johnson added a point for the Ragin' Cajuns after finishing seventh overall in the women's pole vault, clearing the bar at 12-0.

Delphin earned a sixth-place finish for Louisiana in the men's hammer throw after he set a personal-best (181-6) and eclipsing his previous best (178-6) set at the 2016 SBC Outdoor Championships at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.  Carroll added a throw of 169-7 to finish eighth for the Ragin' Cajuns.
