Camp opens for Ragin' Cajuns on Sunday

LAFAYETTE – With the start of fall camp scheduled for Sunday, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns head football coach Mark Hudspeth officially announced the addition of five junior college players for the 2017 season.

Signing a grant-in-aid to play for the Ragin' Cajuns were linebackers Brayden Bailey (St. George, Utah) and Ferrod Gardner (Dayton, Ohio), offensive lineman Kordell Brewster (San Bernardino, Calif.), defensive lineman Mustafa Mitchell (Newark, N.J.) and defensive back DJ Miller (Cedar Hill, Texas).

Bailey, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker, earned second-team All-Mountain Conference honors as a sophomore at College of the Desert after recording 57 tackles with four sacks and an interception.

Gardner, who was a walk-on at Missouri in 2015, posted 67 tackles with a pair of sacks last season at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. He earned honorable mention All-Jayhawk Conference honors in 2016 while recording three fumble recoveries, an interception and a fumble return for a touchdown.

Brewster, a 6-2, 300-pound interior lineman, was a two-year letterwinner at Chaffey (Calif.) College where he was an All-National Central selection as a freshman.

Mitchell earned first-team All-Northeast Football Conference honors in 2016 at Lackawanna (Pa.) College where he finished second on the team in tackles (61) while leading the team with 19 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks.

Miller, who played in five games as a freshman at Tennessee in 2015, spent last season at Navarro (Texas) College where he recorded 29 tackles on the season with seven pass breakups. Ranked as the No. 8 cornerback in the state of Texas by Scout.com coming out of high school, Miller helped Cedar Hill High School to a pair of state championships while picking off eight passes as a senior.

Louisiana, which officially opens camp on Sunday, will open the 2017 season against Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 2 at Cajun Field. The Ragin' Cajuns will also host ULM (Sept. 23), Texas State (Oct. 12), New Mexico State (Nov. 18) and Georgia Southern (Nov. 25) during the 2017 season with non-conference dates at Tulsa (Sept. 9), Texas A&M (Sept. 16) and Ole Miss (Nov. 11) on the schedule.
