LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball opened the 2017 season with a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24) win over Tulane in the first of two matches scheduled between the two squads on Friday at Earl K. Long Gym.

It was a tightly contested match between the Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) and Green Wave (0-1) with only six points separating the two teams. After Louisiana led the distance in the opening set, there were 21 tie scores and 12 lead changes over the final three frames.

Setter Jessica Bartczyszyn handed out 44 assists. Libero Sydney Davis scooped 18 digs and Abram led in the front row with a match-high six blocks (4 BS, 2 BA).

UP NEXT
Louisiana and Tulane return to the court at Earl K. Long Gym at 7 p.m. to complete the season-opening doubleheader. It will be the final match of the weekend for the Ragin' Cajuns who were originally slated to begin their season at the I-10 Cardinals Classic in San Antonio until Hurricane Harvey forced the cancellation of the event.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Ragin' Cajuns scored the match's first three points starting with a kill from Cordell followed by block and kill from Abram. Louisiana led by as many as eight points before Tulane tightened the set to a one-point difference, 23-22, on a Jenna Ibieta ace.

Rovira threw down a kill to keep the Cajuns in the lead, then the Cajuns defense forced Lexie Douglas into an attack error for set point.

- It was back-and-forth in the second set with the lead changing hands five times. An attack error by Tulane's Markezie Benoit gave Louisiana a 22-21 lead. A kill by Douglas and ace from Ibeita put the Green Wave ahead 23-22, then after a brief tie it was a kill from Douglas and block thrown up by Benoit and Kristen Thompson that gave the visitors a 25-23 win which evened the match.

- The Green Wave opened a 4-1 lead to start the third set and held the advantage until a kill from Abram brought Louisiana into a 19-all tie and back-to-back blocks put the Ragin' Cajuns ahead 21-19.

- Louisiana staged a late comeback to prevent Tulane from forcing a decisive fifth set. Trailing 21-16, the Ragin' Cajuns scored four unanswered, getting a pair of aces from Reilly along the way, to cut the deficit to 21-20.

Two kills from Antoine were key to a three-point spurt that pulled Louisiana ahead 24-23. The Green Wave drew even on a kill from Alexis Silver, but Cordell posted a kill to keep the Cajuns from falling behind and a ball handing error charged to Justine Bowers provided match point to Louisiana.
