Ragin' Cajuns, Warhawks set to battle for 53rd time on gridiron

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team opens its 17th season as a Sun Belt Conference member on Saturday when it entertains ULM in the league opener for both teams at Cajun Field.
 
Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN3 with Matt Stewart (play-by-play) and Watson Brown (color) providing the commentary. The game will also be available on the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Radio Network with Jay Walker (play-by-play), former UL receiver Richie Falgout (color) and Cody Junot (sideline) on the call.
 
Louisiana (1-2), which returns home for the first time since opening against Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 2, built a 21-14 lead at halftime in its previous game at Texas A&M before dropping a 45-21 contest. ULM (0-2) opened its season on Aug. 31 with a 37-29 loss at Memphis before dropping a 28-17 contest last week at home against Southern Miss. The Warhawks' game on Sept. 9 at Florida State was canceled due to Hurricane Irma.

THE LOUISIANA-ULM SERIES

• Louisiana and ULM have met 52 times on the gridiron since 1951 with the Ragin' Cajuns holding an official 27-24 lead.
• The series against the Warhawks is the third-longest for Louisiana against current Division I schools trailing Louisiana Tech (87) and Northwestern State (76).
• The Ragin' Cajuns have officially won seven of the last eight contests in the series against ULM, including a 30-3 victory in last year's battle in Monroe - Louisiana's sixth straight win in Monroe dating back to 2005.
• In the last meeting at Cajun Field, the Ragin' Cajuns rallied in the second half to claim a soggy 30-24 victory on Oct. 31, 2015.

RAGIN' CAJUNS COACHING EXPERIENCE
• The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns coaching staff brings a combined total of 196 years of collegiate experience to the table along with 82 bowl/postseason appearances.
• Defensive coordinator Mike Lucas (36 years) and offensive line coach Mitch Rodrigue (32 years) are the most experienced coaches on the staff with co-defensive coordinator Charlie Harbison (19) and Rodrigue (15) the most experience in post-season/bowl games.
• Both coordinators for the Ragin' Cajuns - Will Hall (West Alabama/West Georgia) and Mike Lucas (Southeastern Louisiana) have been head coaches during their collegiate careers.
 
NEW CAJUNS MAKE 2017 DEBUT AGAINST SLU
• Eighteen players, including four true freshmen, made their debut in Louisiana's season-opener against Southeastern Louisiana.
• Deuce Wallace (DB), Ashton Johnson (RB), Errol Brown (DB), Jackson Ladner (LS), Tommy Whitted (DE), Sam Geraci (P), Bennie Higgins (DT), Ryheem Malone (WR), DJ Miller (DB), Mustafa Mitchell (DE) and Justin Middleton (LB) were among the newcomers making their debut in the Vermilion and White. 
• Junior college transfer Koa Haynes earned the start at Rover in place of Tracy Walker, who had to sit out the first half due to helmet-to-helmet contact in the second half against Southern Miss in the 2016 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
• Andre Jones (DE), Elijah Mitchell (RB), Chase Rogers (TE) and Bralen Trahan (DB) each debuted as true freshman for the Cajuns with Trahan recording an interception and Mitchell scoring his first career touchdown with a go-ahead 2-yard run with 8:41 remaining.

NEW SURFACE FOR CAJUN FIELD
• Louisiana's 2017 season-opener against Southeastern Louisiana marked the first contest for the Ragin' Cajuns on the new Matrix Turf surface.
• The previous synthetic surface, which was installed in 2008, was replaced with the same surface used at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium.
• Hellas Construction, based in Austin, Texas, installed the new surface in August.

CAJUNS ADD CINCY TRANSFER GERACI AT PUNTER
• Looking to replace Ray Guy Award semifinalist Steven Coutts at punter, Louisiana picked up former Cincinnati punter Sam Geraci as a graduate transfer.
• Geraci played three seasons with the Bearcats where he averaged 41.5 yards per punt in three seasons with 67 punts placed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
• Geraci averaged 46.3 yards per attempt in 2015 with 17 attempts of 50 yards or more. He averaged 40.0 yards per attempt in 2016, with 37 punts resulting in fair catches and 31 attempts landing inside the 20-yard line.
 
HOMEGROWN CAJUNS
• As with most schools, Louisiana has placed a heavy emphasis on recruiting players within its state borders as 58 players on the roster, including 27 from the nine-parish Acadiana region, hail from the state of Louisiana.
• Fifteen players on the current roster come from Lafayette with 19 coming the talent-rich New Orleans metro area.
 
THE CAJUNS HAVE THE INTERNATIONAL FLAIR
• Reserve lineman Christian Cederquist (Denmark) is the lone international player on the Ragin' Cajuns roster. The Copenhagen native spent last season as a redshirt after transferring from Eastern Arizona College.
 
THE BOOK OF ELI: CHAPTER 2
• With the departure of four-year letterwinner Elijah McGuire at running back, a new chapter  begins this season as true freshman Elijah Mitchell
• Wearing the same number (15) that McGuire wore for his final three seasons, Mitchell carried a team-high 11 times for 56 yards and a touchdown in a season-opening win over Southeastern Louisiana.
• Mitchell added a pair of TDs in Louisiana's game at Tulsa on Sept. 9, scoring on a 20-yard run in the second quarter and hauling in a 19-yard pass from Jordan Davis to open the second half.
 
TEAM CAPTAINS
• Quarterback Jordan Davis, linebacker T.J. Posey, offensive tackle Grant Horst and nose tackle Taboris Lee were voted as team captains for the 2017 season.
 
SBC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME COMING IN 2018
• The Sun Belt Conference will hold its first ever football championship game as the league's presidents and chancellors, as well as athletic directors, voted unanimously to play the game beginning in 2018.  The announcement was made on June 8, 2016.
• Details regarding how the two participants will be selected will be available at a later date.  Rules set forward by the Division I Council in January require conferences with fewer than 12 members to hold championship games in football, as long as they meet one of two conditions. 
• A conference can choose to either play their championship game between division winners after round-robin competition in each division or between the top two teams in the conference standings following full round-robin, regular-season competition between all members of the conference.
 
HUDSPETH HEADS THE SUN BELT COACHING FRATERNITY
• Now in his seventh year at Louisiana, head coach Mark Hudspeth is the dean of the Sun Belt Conference coaching fraternity, having taken over the reins of the Ragin' Cajuns program in 2011.
• Hudspeth, in his 14th season as a head coach, spent seven years as head coach at North Alabama and was an assistant at five schools, including FBS programs Navy and Mississippi State.
 
CUE UP SOME WILLIE ... THE CAJUNS ARE ON THE ROAD AGAIN
• For the first time since the 2011 season, Louisiana will play seven football games on the road, including trips to SEC opponents Texas A&M and Ole Miss, along with American Athletic Conference member Tulsa.
• Also on the road schedule are dates at Sun Belt Conference co-championships Arkansas State (Oct. 19) and Appalachian State (Dec. 2), plus league rivals Idaho (Oct. 7) and South Alabama (Nov. 4).
 
ARTIGUE NAMED TO LOU GROZA WATCH LIST
• Ragin' Cajuns kicker Stevie Artigue was named to the 30-player Watch List for the 2017 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, as announced by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
• Artigue, a junior and former Lafayette High product, was the lone Sun Belt Conference kicker named to the Watch List and was one of two players from the state of Louisiana joining Jonathan Barnes of Louisiana Tech.
• Named a second-team All-Louisiana member last season, Artigue made 19 of 24 field goals on the season and was 29-for-31 in extra point attempts for the Ragin' Cajuns. His 19 field goals made were tied with former Ragin' Cajuns kicker John Roveto (1977) for the second-most in a single-season in school history.

QUARTERBACK NOTEBOOK
• Junior Jordan Davis ranks fourth in the Sun Belt in passing yards (668) and completions (60) and fifth in passing touchdowns (5).
• Davis threw for multiple touchdowns for the second straight contest at Texas A&M passing for 197 yards and two TDs.
• Davis set career highs for attempts (43) and completions (27) in the loss to Texas A&M. He connected with a season-best eight players in the game.
• Davis caught his first career pass against Texas A&M hauling in a 19-yard reception from Darius Hoggins.
• Davis was responsible for all five turnovers (three interceptions, two fumbles) against the Aggies.
• Davis became the 12th quarterback in Louisiana history to pass for 300-plus yards in a game posting 309 yards at Tulsa completing 21 of 32 passes.
• Davis also became the first quarterback since Terrance Broadway on Nov. 7 against Troy to pass for 2-plus TDs and run for 2-plus TDs in the same game accounting for four of the six touchdowns scored against the Golden Hurricane.
• Davis connected with six different targets for the second time on the season at Tulsa.
• Davis made his first career start against Southeastern Louisiana completing 12 of 23 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. Davis had appeared in 10 games in his career prior to 2017 as a backup.
• Davis rushed for 48 yards on eight carries in the win over the Lions. He had a career-best 38-yard carry in the contest on fourth down.
• Davis has rushed for three TDs and thrown for six more in his three seasons with Louisiana.
• Davis has completed 28 of 44 passes for 263 yards including a season-high 256 yards in 2015.
• Sophomore Dion Ray saw time at quarterback in the first two games of the season though he has yet to attempt a pass.
• Ray rushed twice for two yards and a touchdown against Southeastern La.
• Ray appeared in six games at quarterback in 2016 and will be used in a wildcat type package this season. Ray ran for 119 yards on 27 carries and found the endzone twice a year ago.
• Ray rushed for 71 yards on eight carries and a touchdown in the win at Georgia Southern a year ago.
• Ray also rushed for a TD in the 2016 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl against Southern Miss.
• Junior transfer Andre Nunez adds depth at the position. Nunez completed 143 of 234 passes (61.1 percent) for 1,723 yards and 17 touchdowns as a redshirt sophomore at Iowa Western Community College.
• True freshman Levi Lewis impressed at 2017 fall camp and is behind Nunez on the depth chart, while true freshman Kadon Harrison is expected to redshirt.
 
RUNNING BACK NOTEBOOK
• The Ragin' Cajuns will use a number of running backs this season in an effort to replace Louisiana record holder Elijah McGuire.
• Trey Ragas has recorded a touchdown in each of the Cajuns first three games of the season to lead the squad with three.
• Ragas ranks third in the Sun Belt Conference in rushing yards (284) averaging 94.7 yards per game. He also ranks fourth in the league in rushing TDs.
• Ragas has led Louisiana in rushing in all three games after picking up 93 yards on 14 carries at Texas A&M.
• Ragas became the first back this season to rush for 100 yards in a game amassing 130 yards on 11 carries (11.8 avg.) at Tulsa including his second touchdown of the season.
• Jordan Wright hauled in his first receiving touchdown at Texas A&M. Wright leads the Cajuns backs with three receptions this season.
• Elijah Mitchell has seen action in all three games for Louisiana joining Ragas as the only Ragin' Cajuns running backs to carry the ball in all three contests.
• Mitchell found the endzone twice for the Ragin' Cajuns against the Golden Hurricane rushing for one while registering the other through the air.
• Mitchell posted over 100 yards from scrimmage against Tulsa rushing for 85 yards on eight carries while also catching one ball for 19 yards.
• All three running backs found the endzone against Southeastern La. as Ragas amassed a game-high 61 yards on the ground on just four carries (15.3 avg.) before leaving the game with an injury. 54 of those 61 yards came on his TD carry in the first quarter.
• Ragas missed the 2016 season after suffering an injury in fall camp.
• Senior Darrius Hoggins saw his first action of the season at Texas A&M carrying the ball once for two yards. Hoggins missed the first two games of the 2017 season due to an injury suffered at fall camp.
• Hoggins completed his only pass of his career at Texas A&M connecting with quarterback Jordan Davis for 19 yards.
• Hoggins returns with the most experience having seen action in 27 games in three seasons. He has rushed for 381 yards on 64 carries including two touchdowns. Hoggins also has eight catches for 34 yards.
• Hoggins had a season-best 284 yards on 52 carries a year ago. Notched his second career TD at New Mexico State.
• Wright saw action in 12 games last season recording 92 yards on the ground on 62 carries. He had 10-plus carries twice in 2016 against ULM and New Mexico State.
• Wright had a pair of catches for nine yards last season.
• Raymond Calais saw his only action of the season in the backfield at Tulsa rushing three times for 12 yards.
• Calais appeared in nine games during in 2016 rushing for 117 yards on 23 carries. Posted a TD against McNeese on his only carry of the game.
• Calais missed the final three games of last season with an injury.
 
WIDE RECEIVER NOTEBOOK
• Keenan Barnes ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference in both receptions (21) and yards (290). He is one reception back of Jaleel Scott, New Mexico State, for the league lead, while he needs just five receiving yards to equal Scott for first.
• Ryheem Malone ranks third in the SBC in receiving touchdowns with two this season. He is also ranked fourth in receptions (17) and receiving yards (196).
• Barnes notched his second 100-yard receiving game of the season posting a career-high 118 yards on a career-best 12 catches at Texas A&M. The 12 catches are the most by a Louisiana receiver since Nov. 21, 2015 when Jamal Robinson had 12 catches against New Mexico State at Cajun Field.
• For the first time since 2012, the Ragin' Cajuns had two receivers post 100-plus yards in a game with both Malone (119) and Barnes (102) each eclipsed the mark at Tulsa. The last duo to achieve that feat was Harry Peoples and Javone Lawson against South Alabama on Nov. 24, 2012.
• The Cajuns receiver group is among the most experienced positions on the squad as they return five players who have seen action in the last two seasons.
• Malone led the Ragin' Cajuns in receptions the first two games of the season after notching eight grabs for 119 yards at Tulsa. He had a game-high four receptions for 37 yards and a touchdown against Southeastern Louisiana.
• Malone was tied for second at SMU in 2015 with 23 receptions for 258 yards and two touchdowns.
• Barnes had six catches and a touchdown against the Golden Hurricane.
• Barnes led the receivers against Southeastern Louisiana hauling in three catches for a game-high 70 yards.
• Barnes has had at least one catch in 15 of the last 16 games.
• Barnes was named to the 2017 Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team.
• Barnes had 32 catches for 445 yards and six touchdowns coming into the season.
• Barnes was named All-Sun Belt Honorable mention after finishing the 2016 season tied for the conference lead in TD receptions with six.
• Barnes posted a season-best 418 yards on 31 grabs a year ago.
• Sophomore Ja'Marcus Bradley has a catch in four straight contests dating back to the New Orleans Bowl after posting two catches for 16 yards against the Aggies.
• Bradley picked up 34 yards through the air on his only reception of the game against Southeastern La. He also had one rush for 11 yards in the win over the Lions.
• Bradley caught 21 passes for 370 yards and a touchdown in 2016.
• Bradley posted a career-best 113 yards on four catches in the win over Arkansas State. He also had 97 yards on six grabs with a TD against McNeese.
• Sophomore Michael Jacquet recorded three grabs for 20 yards at Texas A&M. He also had three catches for 42 yards at Tulsa, while posting two catches in the season opener.
• Jacquet has moved to the slot this season, but will also see time on the outside in 2017. Jacquet caught 15 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown in 11 games in 2016.
• Jacquet notched a career-best 77 yards on three catches against Idaho.
• Devin Scott is back for his senior season after missing all of 2016 due to an injury suffered at fall camp. Scott has 18 catches for 326 yards in 34 games.
• Scott posted a season-best 202 yards on 12 grabs in 2015.
• Sophomore Jarrod Jackson adds depth to the position after seeing action in six games a year ago.
 
TIGHT END NOTEBOOK
• Chase Rogers picked up the first receptions by a Louisiana tight end this season posting two grabs for four yards at Texas A&M.
• Rogers and senior Raynard Ford have shared the bulk of the action at tight end through the first three games of the season.
• Ford made the move from the offensive line to tight end for the 2017 season. Ford saw action in 10 games a year ago including one start at right tackle against Tulane.
• Matt Barnes, Chris Turner and Andre Landry have also seen action on the field this season.
• Sophomore Carlos Robinson has missed the first three games of the season due to injury.
 
OFFENSIVE LINE NOTEBOOK
• The Louisiana offensive line returns four of five starters from a year ago including Grant Horst, D'Aquin Withrow, Robert Hunt and Kevin Dotson.
• Horst made the move from right tackle to left tackle, but could play at both positions this season.
• Withrow has made 23 starts in his career after starting all 13 games at left tackle in 2016. He has shifted over to the right side this season with Horst making the move to left tackle.
• Hunt also started in all 13 games last season at left guard, while Dotson made 12 straight starts at right guard for the Cajuns a year ago.
• Cole Prudhomme made the start at center for the Ragin' Cajuns in the first three games of the season. Junior transfer Kordell Brewster is backing up Prudhomme at center.
• Staten Wade played a good portion of the Tulsa game when Hunt moved to tackle to replace Withrow.

DEFENSIVE LINE NOTES
• Kevon Perry had four tackles in the first quarter and he finished the game with nine total tackles, which is a career high.  He broke his personal record in the third quarter.  His previous career high had been five tackles against Southeastern Louisiana in the 2017 season opener on Sept. 9.  Perry included two tackles for loss as well which resulted in five yards being lost by the Aggies.
• Joe Dillon's forced fumble is the second of his career (the first being at Tulane on Sept. 24, 2016) and he finished with four tackles on the day, including one tackle for loss that resulted in eight yards lost for the Aggies.
• LaDarrius Kidd tied a career high with four tackles, along with a tackle for loss that resulted in a two-yard loss for the Aggies.
• Bennie Higgins recorded a career-high four tackles with a tackle for loss at Texas A&M.
 
LINEBACKER NOTES
• T.J. Posey recorded four tackles on the day including one that resulted in a one yard loss for the Aggies. Posey now sits tied for ninth in FBS with 19 assisted tackles.
 
DEFENSIVE BACK NOTES
• Tracy Walker's first quarter interception is the first of the season for Walker and the seventh of his career (the first since Dec. 3, 2016 at ULM); third career INT against an SEC school (the last being at Georgia on Nov. 19, 2016).
• Walker now sits tied for 12th in FBS with 20 solo tackles and he's tied for 11th in FBS with four passes defended. His 26 total tackles leads the Cajuns.
• Damar'ren Mitchell tied for the team-lead lead nine total tackles, including seven solo.  Both were career highs. 
• Simeon Thomas defended three passes in the game and that ties his total amount from the 2016 season.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES
• Calvin Linden's PAT in the second quarter on the first TD was the first made PAT of his career; Linden also recorded the first tackle of his career.
• DJ Miller recovered a muffed punt; first recovery of his career; first time the Cajuns got a turnover on special teams this season the last time being at ULM on Dec. 3, 2016 (a fumbled kickoff); first fumble recovery on a punt return since Oct. 22, 2016 at Texas State.
