Koenig Falls In Back Draw Semis At Cajuns Tennis Classic

9/23/2017 4:30:00 PM | Men's Tennis

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana freshman Dominik Koenig, playing in the semifinals back draw of flight two, lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to end his good run in the 2017 John Breaux Cajuns Tennis classic, while the Cajuns pair of senior Vlad Kramarov and sophomore Pearse Dolan won a match in the doubles back draw to wrap up the second day of the classic here at Cajuns Courts.

HOW IT HAPPANED (Doubles Back Draw): In the doubles back draw the Cajuns pair of senior Vlad Kramarov and sophomore Pearse Dolan took down the USF duo of Burnette/Wojcik in a battle that went all the way.

The Cajuns' pair controlled the match, but the USF grouping wouldn't go down quietly.  With Kramarov and Dolan leading 5-2, Burnette and Wojcik dug in deep and held off several chances for the Cajuns to finish the deal.  Including a deuce point that USF won to put the score at 5-3 still in favor of Louisiana.

But the Cajuns pair wasn't about to let the match get away, and they tapped into their competitive juices to wrestle back control.  And with the match tied at 5-5, Kramarov and Dolan didn't let the USF duo any room to breathe and they aggressively finished off Burnette and Wojcik to give the Cajuns an early victory on the day.

Sophomore Jamie Fraser and freshman Nico Sojka faced off against and lost to another USF pairing of Heimer and Luquet 6-3.  The Cajuns duo did get close early in the match getting it to 3-2 in favor of the USF pair but the two Louisiana men couldn't stay in the match and in the end, they fell short of victory.

In the final doubles match for the Cajuns, the pairing of sophomore Silvio Cocito-Monoc and freshman Dominik Koenig lost to the Georgia State duo of Acuna/McFarlane 6-1.

Later in the day Kramarov and Dolan, in the semifinals of the doubles back draw, faced off against the Georgia State pairing of Acuna/McFarlane.  In the match the Cajuns run in the back draw fell short of a trip to the finals with a 6-2 loss to the Georgia State pair.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles Flight Two) Back Draw: In the lone singles match for the Cajuns today, Koenig faced off against LSU's Agie Moreno in the semifinals of flight two's back draw.  In the match Koenig, fresh off his first career win yesterday, dropped the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Both sets were back and forth affairs, but Moreno pulled away late both times to get the win.  In set one and two the score was evened up at 4-4 and Moreno squeezed out wins in the final two games of both sets to finish the match ahead of Koenig.

UP NEXT: The Cajuns Tennis Classic concludes tomorrow with the flight two singles finals scheduled to go on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and both singles flights of the back draw are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.  The doubles back draw finals will begin at least 30 minutes after the flight two singles finals to complete a full morning of tennis in the final day of the tournament.

As for the flight one singles final, the match is scheduled to start at noon and the match will be streamed live on ESPN3.  The doubles final will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of the flight one singles final and that too will be streamed on ESPN3.
