Cajuns Finish Solid Day At Southern Miss Invite

HATTIESBURG, MISS. – Freshman Pierce Gilheany won his first two career matches to highlight a busy day for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team at the Southern Miss Invitational.
The Cajuns took played three dual-meet style matches with two being in singles on one being in doubles. In singles, they took on South Alabama and UAB, while in doubles they faced Southern Miss.
HOW IT HAPPENED (SINGLES VS. UAB): The Cajuns ended the match with a 4-2 overall point victory over the Blazers.
Playing in the No. 1 spot, sophomore Jamie Fraser started the match off with a three-set battle victory against UAB's Parton, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5.
Fraser dropped the first set, but he didn't let it phase him and he stormed back in the next two sets winning easily in the second set to force a third set 10-point breaker. In that breaker, he handled his opponent taking the set and the match in running away.
Freshman Dominik Koenig, playing No. 2 singles, dropped his match in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to UAB's Pasini. While in the No. 3 spot junior Arthur Libaud dropped his match in straight sets as well, 7-5, 6-2, to UAB's Fourie.
In the bottom three spots the Cajuns had a clean sweep, starting with sophomore Pearse Dolan's win over Manchev in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Nico Sojka, slotted at No.5, won his match against Paiste 7-6 (0), 6-3. The win was Sojka's first of his career joining Gilheany by checking off that career box.
Gilheany, playing No. 6, wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 victory over UAB's Goering. The final match was a battle, but Gilheany didn't lose focus after losing the second set and he went on to handle his opponent in the third-set tiebreaker to come away with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED (SINGLES VS. USA): The Cajuns spilt the four matches they played against USA with three of the four matches going to a third-set tiebreaker.
Fraser dropped his match to Gingras 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Fraser came back from dropping the second set, to make the tiebreaker a battle but in the end, he fell just short of his second win on the day.
Koenig found himself in a three-set match, but he dropped it in the end losing to Gonzalez 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. Koenig came out and took the first set, but Gonzalez fought back to take the next two sets, including a close tiebreaker to come away with the win.
Libaud got his first win on the day in straight sets, taking down Loreto 6-4, 6-3. While Gilheany recorded his second win on the day, going three sets with USA's Fruh, with the final score sitting at 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
Gilheany came out and snagged the first set, but after losing the second set, he refocused himself and easily won the tiebreaker 10-5 for his second career win.

Senior Vlad Kramarov and Koenig took down Tortrakul and Esipov of USM 6-3 to give the Cajuns their lone doubles win on the day. Libaud and Fraser fell 6-1 to the USM pair of Han Tsai and Tseng and Dolan and Gilheany lost 6-4 to Bisht and Merker to finish off the doubles match between the two schools.
