Louisiana kicks off the weekend playing the hosting No. 21 Florida State Seminoles, with that match scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. CST on Saturday, Jan. 13.
LAFAYETTE – For the second straight season, the Louisiana men's tennis team will open up their 2018 spring season with a trip to the 2018 Florida State Spring Invitational, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11:30 a.m. CST in Tallahassee, Fla, and ending on Sunday, Jan. 14.
WHO'S ALL THERE: Louisiana is one of eight teams attending the weekend's tournament and it's hosted by the Cajuns first opponents, the No. 21 Florida State Seminoles. The rest of the field is made up by Georgia State; Mercer; Florida Atlantic; Furman; Florida A&M and North Florida.
THE CAJUNS WEEKEND: Louisiana opens up with the Seminoles, with that match starting at 11:30 a.m. CST, and from there, depending how they do, they'll face either Georgia State or Mercer in the next round.
A first-round win would mean the Cajuns would play their second match on the same day, Saturday, Jan. 13, with that match starting at 5:30 p.m. CST and a loss would mean the Cajuns would play their final two matches on Sunday with their first match starting at 9:00 a.m. The championship match is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CST on Sunday, Jan. 14, and it would take two wins on Saturday for Louisiana to reach that match.
WHAT FLORIDA STATE BRINGS: The No. 21 Seminoles enter the weekend 3-0, and they own a 11-10 all-time record over the Cajuns. They've already played three matches in Hawai'i to start their season. They handled Hawai'i twice, winning both matches 7-0, 7-0, before beating the No. 24 Texas Tech Red Raiders, 6-1, to wrap up their perfect first weekend to start the 2018 season.
After the fall season the Seminoles had three of their singles players ranked in the top 125 nationally. Guy Iradukunda (22nd) and Lucas Poullain (24th) give FSU two players ranked in the top 25 in the nation, while Alex Knaff, ranked 59th in the nation, rounds out the Seminoles top ranked singles players. In doubles the Seminoles bring one top ranked pairing into the spring, with the duo of Jose Garcia and Lucas Poullian being ranked eighth in the nation in doubles.
IT'S COLD OUT THERE: Due to the cold weather, the entire tournament has been moved indoors, with the schedule being slightly altered to accommodate the new surroundings.
SINGLES OR DOUBLES FIRST CAJUNS ARE READY: The format for the weekend's tournament will change throughout the tournament. The first round's matches will be played with a singles first format, with doubles being played after singles play is over.
From there the championship half of the bracket will be played with the classic doubles first format. While the back-draw portion of the bracket will maintain the singles first format for the remainder of the tournament.
HOW TO WATCH THE TOURNAMENT: Live stats will be provided via the Florida State athletic department, with updates being posted as the matches roll along. A link to the live stats can be found on the Cajuns men's tennis schedule page portion of the website.
