1/22/2018 3:16:00 PM | Men's Tennis
For the first time since 2011 the Cajuns will face the LSU Tigers on the tennis court with Tuesday evening matchup in Baton Rouge.
LAFAYETTE – After beating Rice on Sunday, Jan. 21, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team plays one last road match before opening up Cajun Courts for the 2018 season with an early week evening match in Baton Rouge, La., against the LSU Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 23 with first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.
CAJUNS SPLIT TEXAS: Louisiana lost to No. 25 Texas Tech on Friday, Jan. 19, 7-0, in Lubbock, Texas but they turned around and beat, for the first time in three-seasons, the Rice Owls, 4-2, in Houston, Texas on Sunday, Jan. 21. Against Rice the Cajuns won their first doubles point of the season and it set them up for a big win against a Rice team that finished the 2017 season ranked No. 44 in the nation and they are the defending C-USA Champions having won their conference in 2017.
GILHEANY STARTS STRONG: Freshman Pierce Gilheany has hit the ground running in the first spring season of his collegiate career, going 2-0 over the first two weekends. Playing at the No. 6 he got a win against Mercer's Ruben Vanoppen in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5 and on Sunday he got the first singles win of the match, again playing the No. 6, when he took down Rice's Jaren Aiman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
IT'S BEEN A FEW YEARS: The last time the Cajuns and Tigers met on the court was in 2011, so it's been a few years. That match took place in Baton Rouge, and the Tigers won 6-1 to improve their all-time record against the Cajuns to 19-0.
WHAT THE TIGERS BRING: LSU enters the match 4-0 having played four matches against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, winning all of those with a combined score of 19-0. The Tigers who, didn't crack the top-50 during the 2017 season, started their 2017 fall season off strong with Nikola Samardzic and Rafael Wagner each winning seven matches across the fall season.Â
          Â
LSU does return a nationally ranked doubles partnership from the 2017 season. Julian Saborio and Gabor Csonka finished the 2017 season ranked No. 80 nationally in doubles competition. And the Saborio/Csonka pair already have two wins through the Tigers' first four matches of the season.Â
HOW TO FOLLOW/WATCH THE MATCH: Weather permitting the match will be played outdoors and if that's the case there will be a live video provided by the LSU athletic department. Live stats will be provided no matter where the match takes place be it indoors or outdoors. Â
