Louisiana welcomes Southern and Northwestern State on Wednesday in a mid-week doubleheader.

LAFAYETTE – On Wednesday, Jan. 31 the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team continues its seven match stretch at home to open up the 2018 season with a doubleheader against the Southern Jaguars, starting at 10 a.m. and the Northwestern State Lady Demons with first serve scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The match against Southern was one of two matches rescheduled from Saturday, Jan. 27 due to the weather conditions, while the Northwestern State match was a part of the season's original schedule.

Louisiana enters the match 2-0 on the season after sweeping Southeastern Louisiana and LSU-Alexandria on Sunday, Jan. 28.

RECAPPING SLU: In the match against Southeastern Louisiana, the Cajuns were taken to the wire by the Lions, but Louisiana pulled off the win, 4-3, thanks to a clinching win at No. 6 by sophomore Marina Rodriguez Garcia.  After losing the doubles point the Cajuns were forced to win four out of six singles matches to come away with the season opening win.

They got a big win at No. 1, with senior Kelly Drew coming back from being down 4-1 in the first set to win her match, 7-5, 6-1.  And the Cajuns picked up wins from freshmen Dana Radovanovic (6-2, 6-3 at No. 2) and Floriane Picaut (6-1, 6-2 at No. 3) to set up Garcia's clinching win at No. 6 to get the Cajuns off on the winning foot.

RECAPPING LSUA: Shortly after the match against SLU the Cajuns began their match against LSUA in the second half of the doubleheader, in that match the Cajuns easily handled the Generals to win 4-0 and get their second win on the day.

The Cajuns swept the doubles point 3-0, getting wins from freshman Morgan Forshag and senior Abby Johnson at No. 2 (6-0), Drew and Garcia at No. 3 (6-2) and a solid comeback win from the freshmen duo of Picaut and Radovanovic, who were trailing 4-1 at one point, but stormed back to win the match 7-6 (5).  Forshag, at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0), Garica, at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2) and Picaut's clinching win at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2) locked things up for the Cajuns in singles play and the match was ended due to weather with the Cajuns holding the 4-0 advantage in the match.

WHAT THE JAGUARS BRING: Southern enters the match with a 0-1 record having lost at LSU, 4-0, on Saturday, Jan. 20.  Last season Southern finished 11-9, advancing to the second round of the 2017 SWAC Tennis Championships before losing to Jackson State.  This is the second straight season that the Cajuns have faced off with Southern, having won last year's meeting at Cajun Courts, 4-1.  In fact, the Cajuns have won the previous four meetings between the two schools, having not lost to Southern since Apr. 1, 2009.

WHAT THE LADY DEMONS BRING: Northwestern State has lost their first two matches by a combined score of 11-0, losing to LSU (7-0) on Jan. 20 and Tulane (4-0) on Jan. 21, to place their record at 0-2 as they enter the mid-week matchup with the Cajuns.  The Cajuns faced off with Northwestern State last season, losing 4-0, and that was the first time the two teams had met in the spring season in two seasons.  And it's been over five years since the Cajuns beat the Lady Demons, with the last win being a 4-3 win on Mar. 17, 2011.
