Men's Tennis To Face UTSA And Incarnate Word On The Road

2/1/2018 2:55:00 PM | Men's Tennis

The Cajuns head to San Antonio, Texas to face off with the UTSA Roadrunners, on Friday, Feb. 2, and the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Sunday, Feb. 4.

LAFAYETTE – After opening up Cajun Courts with two wins this past weekend, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team once again hits the road, as they head back to Texas to face off with UTSA on Friday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. and Incarnate Word on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m., with both matches taking place in San Antonio, Texas.

The Cajuns enter the match sitting at 4-4 after winning three matches out of four during the previous week, including sweeping their home opening doubleheader against Xavier (La.) the No. 2 ranked NAIA school in the nation.

This will be the third straight season that the Cajuns have faced off with UTSA, having won the previous season's matchup at Cajun Courts, 4-2.  Against Incarnate Word this will be the third straight season the two teams have met on the court and the Cajuns have won the previous three matchups going back to 2014.

CAJUNS ARE ROAD WARRIORS: The Cajuns are in the middle of a stretch of road matches that they haven't been a part of in over a decade.  When they finish next weekend's trip to Virginia, Old Dominion (Feb. 10) and VCU (Feb. 13), Louisiana will have played 10 matches away from Cajun Courts.  It's the most amount of road matches the Cajuns have played in the first month of the season since taking part of seven in 2013.

DOLAN IS CRUISING: Through the first month of the season, sophomore Pearse Dolan has been impressive in both singles and doubles.  In singles, Dolan has only lost two matches going 5-2, 2-0 at No. 3 singles and 3-0 at No. 4 singles and he's won his last three matches.  In doubles, with his freshman partner Pierce Gilheany, Dolan sits at 4-0 making his overall spring record a solid 9-2.

KRAMAROV SHOWS SENIOR LEADERSHIP: The Cajuns lone senior on the team, Vlad Kramarov has been a vocal leader who's heard loudly throughout each match when he snags himself a set win, and a match win to pump up his teammates.  Fortunately for the Cajuns those set wins have been coming in the bunches as Kramarov has won his previous four matches without dropping a set, and he currently sits 5-2 in the spring season in singles.

WHAT THE ROADRUNNERS BRING: UTSA enters the match with a 1-3 record on the season, and this match will be their 2018 home opener and much like Louisiana, the Roadrunners have played a tough schedule to start the season having played two top-25 ranked opponents in the first month.  They opened up at then ranked No. 24 Texas Tech, and they followed that up in the next weekend with a trip to Austin, Texas to face off with the then ranked No. 8 Texas Longhorns.

Although they lost 7-0 at Texas, the Roadrunners did give Texas Tech a run for their money taking two singles matches, in three-set marathons, and they lost the clinching point in another three-set marathon showing that the Roadrunners have the ability to take a team the distance.

Kai Breitbach, playing all his matches at No. 3 singles, leads the Roadrunners in wins having gone 3-1 through the Roadrunners first four matches.  Breitbach snagged the Roadrunners first against Texas Tech, with a three-set win at No. 3 against Ilgiz Valiev.

WHAT THE CARDINALS BRING: Incarnate Word currently sits with a 1-2 record, having gone up to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado to face off with Air Force, Northern Colorado and Georgia Southern.  The Cardinals won their final match in Colorado, with a 5-2 win against Georgia Southern.  Before facing off with the Cajuns in their home opener, Incarnate Word will play one more road match when they travel to St. Mary's on Feb. 2.

Against Georgia Southern, the Cardinals lost the doubles point and No. 1 singles, but turned things on for the middle part of the match and got wins at No. 2 through No. 6.  Three of those wins went to three-sets as Incarnate Word showed their fitness at high elevation and at the end of the weekend.

TRACKING THE MATCHES: Neither match will have live stats provided, but updates will be provided on twitter as they come in, along with the lineups being posted prior to the start of doubles and singles.
