Florida Takes First Two in Top 25 Series at Lamson Park

2/17/2018 10:08:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE – No. 2 Florida captured both ends of a doubleheader from No. 16 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball as a Top 25 weekend series began Saturday at Lamson Park.

The Ragin' Cajuns (6-2) and Gators (8-0) played a scoreless duel for the first five innings of the opener. A pair of two-run homers from Florida in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in a 4-0 contest.

The visitors rode the momentum of a four-run first inning in the nightcap on the way to a 9-0 (6 inn.) win which captured the series win.

Louisiana had its season-opening, six-game win streak snapped.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Freshman pitcher Casey Dixon started Game 1 for Louisiana and faced just two over the minimum in matching Florida's Kelly Barnhill. Kylee Jo Trahan opened her relief stint with 2-1/3 scoreless innings in carrying the scoreless battle into the sixth inning.

The Ragin' Cajuns defense turned three double plays in the first four innings of the opener. Alissa Dalton initiated a 6-4-3 double play in the first inning, Kara Gremillion made a leaping catch to convert an unassisted double play in the third inning and Aeriyl Mass dove to turn a double play on a lineout in the fourth inning.

Dalton topped all Cajuns with a pair of hits on the day – one apiece in each contest. She continued her season-opening streak of consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout to 30.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
The two teams were scoreless through five complete due to key defensive plays on both side. The Gators made a play at the plate when Brittany Rodriguez attempted to score in the first inning of a Dalton single. Each time UF got a runner aboard in the third and the fourth inning, the Ragin' Cajuns turned a double play.

Florida broke through in the sixth inning off two-run homers from Nicole DeWitt and Janell Wheaton. Barnhill retired Louisiana in order in the bottom half to keep the momentum on the Gators side.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
A pair of walks in the first inning – two of the 13 free bases the Gators drew – came around to score and the visitors went on to plate four total in claiming an early lead. UF starting pitcher Aleshia Ocasio protected the lead as she faced the minimum through the first three innings.

Louisiana starting pitcher Carrie Boswell settled in and kept the Gators from extending the lead until DeWitt's second homer of the twinbill increased the lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning.
The Ragin' Cajuns had a scoring threat in the fifth inning after Casidy Chaumont and Kourtney Gremillion singled to start the frame. Later in the frame Chaumont would round third off a misplayed grounder, but a heads-up play by UF second baseman Hannah Adams led to a putout at home plate.
