Ellyson's Record-Breaking Performance Highlights Friday Sweep

2/9/2018 11:01:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE – No. 22 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball followed the lead of pitchers Kylee Jo Trahan and Summer Ellyson to a sweep of Friday's action in the Mardi Gras Classic in front of 1,815 fans at Lamson Park.

Trahan struck out nine and held Eastern Illinois to three hits as Louisiana (3-0) opened the day with a 2-1 triumph. The senior hurler retired 12 of the final 14 batters she faced after the Panthers scratched their lone run.

In the nightcap, Ellyson established a new school record for strikeouts in a seven inning game by landing 20 strikeouts in a 7-1 win over Evansville. The Lafayette native and Teurlings Catholic HS product struck out each of the first 10 batters she faced.

Ellyson surpassed the previous seven-inning strikeout standard of 18 set by Jordan Wallace in April 2014 vs. Middle Tennessee. She came within two of the program's all-time record 22 crafted by Brooke Mitchell in a 9-inning affair vs. Nevada in February 2004.

The Ragin' Cajuns pitching duo combined to face only eight batters over the minimum over the 14 innings contested.

The offense closed out the day with a season-high 11 hits and scored in all but one inning against Evansville.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Brittany Holland delivered a second consecutive multiple-hit game to start the season going 2-for-3 vs. Eastern Illinois.

Alissa Dalton's perfectly driven squeeze bunt up the third base line brought home the winning run against the Panthers.

Freshman Jolie Readeaux was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead a quartet of Ragin' Cajuns with multiple hits against Evansville. Kara Gremillion, Aeriyl Mass and Brittany Rodriguez each tallied two hits.

Gremillion had a stolen base in each game and Louisiana tallied seven swipes on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. EASTERN ILLINOIS
- Holland singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the second inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Readeaux. EIU pulled even at 1-1 in the fourth inning on a leadoff home run by Haley Mitchell.

Trahan stood her ground the rest of the way, then the Ragin' Cajuns used the short game to manufacture the decisive tally in the fifth inning. In succession, Readeaux sacrificed Rodriguez to second, Martinez dropped a bunt single and Dalton pushed the squeeze bunt up the third base line to score Rodriguez.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. EVANSVILLE
- As Ellyson proceeded to strikeout the Aces the first time through the lineup, Louisiana steadily built an early cushion. Martinez scored the first run when she and Dalton executed a double steal in the first inning. Run-scoring singles from Readeaux and Holland in the second and third inning, respectively, made it 3-0.

After Evansville scored off a two-double by Brittany Hay in the fourth inning, the Ragin' Cajuns responded in their next at bat. After loading the bases with no outs, Mass scored on a wild pitch and Gremillion later extended the lead to 5-1 with an RBI single.
