Â
A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: The left side is anchored by veteran third baseman Kara Gremillion and sophomore transfer Alissa Dalton (Oklahoma) at shortstop, both preseason All-Sun Belt selections. On the right side, Kourtney Gremillion (Kara's sister) covers first base while freshman Casidy Chaumont has emerged as the front-runner at second base following the season-ending injury to JUCO transfer Brittany Holland.
Â
Outfield: Senior Kelli Martinez, a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, is patrolling left field for the second straight season. Redshirt freshman Aeriyl Mass received the majority of the starts in center field opening weekend and has continued to anchor the defense in that area. Senior transfer Brittany Rodriguez (Lamar) has taken hold of the right field corner and is settling in as the team's leadoff hitter.
Â
Pitchers: Senior Kylee Jo Trahan is the veteran leader of a staff that includes eight arms. Sophomore Summer Ellyson and freshmen Casey Dixon and Carrie Boswell are also candidates to receive starts. Junior Alison Deville gives the Cajuns a left-handed option out of the bullpen.
Â
Catchers: Returning starter and preseason All-Sun Belt choice Lexie Comeaux leads the group. Freshman Caitlin Garcia and sophomore Beth Ashley have also seen time behind the plate. Expect a rotation at the position this season as the coaching staff seeks to lessen the load for Comeaux, who started all 55 games in 2017.
Â
NOTEWORTHY
BACK IN CALIFORNIA: The Ragin' Cajuns are back in Fullerton for the first time since 2011. When the Judi Garman Classic began as the PONY Invitational in 1994, Louisiana was a yearly visitor for the tournament each year through 2011.
Â
CONFERENCE IS CALLING: The Judi Garman Classic marks Louisiana's final non-conference weekend. Beginning next weekend at Coastal Carolina, the Ragin' Cajuns will close the regular season with nine consecutive weeks of Sun Belt Conference action.
Â
APPLYING PRESSURE: Whether it's a stolen base, picking up extra bases off a relay throw or utilizing the squeeze bunt – the Ragin' Cajuns keep opposing defenses on their heels. Louisiana enters the Judi Garman Classic 39-of-45 in the stolen base department.
Â
BATTLING UNTIL THE END: The Ragin' Cajuns own six come-from-behind wins on the young season – two occurring in last weekend's Louisiana Classics (Feb. 23 vs. North Florida; Feb. 25 vs. Memphis).
Â
GOING THE DISTANCE: Louisiana improved to 3-0 in extra innings in the 2018 season with last Sunday's 11-inning win over Memphis. The Ragin' Cajuns also defeated Eastern Illinois in nine innings on Feb. 10 and No. 2 Florida in 11 innings on Feb. 18.
Â
SUPER SUMMER: In 23-2/3 innings pitched in the Louisiana Classics, Summer Ellyson did not allow an earned run. She limited foes to just eight hits and a .105 average. Ellyson currently leads the Sun Belt Conference with a 1.59 season ERA.
Â
WHATEVER IT TAKES: Whether it's been a 20-strikeout game, a 185-pitch effort in a win over No. 2 Florida, a no-hitter or a lengthy relief effort (9-2/3 innings vs. Memphis), sophomore pitcher Summer Ellyson personifies the mentality of the Ragin' Cajuns squad – doing whatever it takes to succeed.
Â
MULTIPLE STARS: Whether it's been Kylee Jo Trahan and Summer Ellyson with big moments in the circle, Alissa Dalton with a squeeze bunt for the winning run and Casidy Chaumont with a walk-off homer or Lexie Comeaux with a back-breaking homer – Louisiana has seen defining moments from several players.
Â
FINDING A GROOVE: Louisiana posted double digit hits in three of five outings in last week's Louisiana Classics. The Ragin' Cajuns have now reached double digits six times this season. Additionally, the squad produced 10 doubles in the Louisiana Classics.
Â
QUICK HITS
• Louisiana makes its road debut in March for the second straight season. The Ragin' Cajuns closed its season-opening homestand, which began with the Mardi Gras Classic back on Feb. 8, with an 11-3 mark.
• Kara Gremillion is the Ragin' Cajuns and Sun Belt Conference leader in stolen bases. Gremillion is 9-for-9 in swipes this season – a new career-high total.
• Alissa Dalton continues to impress at shortstop. The Oklahoma transfer has fielded all 40 chances (15 PO, 25 A) cleanly.
• Beth Ashley, who produced three doubles in last weekend's Louisiana Classics, is the current team leader with four doubles.
• Brittany Rodriguez closed the Louisiana Classics with her season-high for hits in a 4-for-6 showing at the plate. She enters the Judi Garman Classic having gone 6-for-10 at the plate the past two outings.
• The 5-3 putout is a unique one for Louisiana as it pairs sisters Kara Gremillion (third base) and Kourtney Gremillion (first base). The siblings are one the playing field together for the first time since Spring 2015 at St. Amant High School.
• The Ragin' Cajuns coaching staff includes Joe Guthrie (assisted Gerry Glasco in 2017 Scrap Yard Dawgs NPF title run) and NFCA All-American pitchers Ellen Renfroe Reed and Courtnay Foster. Guthrie coordinates the team's defense while Renfroe Reed and Foster team up to tutor the squad's pitching staff.
