No. 70 Louisiana Wraps Up First Day At HEB Tournament

3/2/2018 11:12:00 PM | Men's Tennis

Sophomore Elio Lago went 2-0 on the day to extend his winning streak to eight straight.

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Sophomore Elio Lago won two matches on the day in singles, stretching his winning streak to eight straight, but the No. 70 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team dropped both of their matches to the UTSA Roadrunners (4-2) and DePaul Blue Demons (4-3) on the first day of the HEB Tournament of Champions.

Louisiana played UTSA tough, with all but one of the matches going to three-sets, and the Cajunscame close to staging a comeback against DePaul in their second match, fighting back after dropping the doubles point.  But they couldn't finish the comeback off and they'll wrap up the weekend playing UT Rio Grande Valley in their final match of the tournament, tomorrow (Mar. 3) at 9:30 a.m.

VS. UTSA
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana got off to a solid start taking the doubles point to go ahead in the match 1-0.  It started with Lago and senior Vlad Kramarov winning at No. 1 against UTSA's Gonzalez and Reckow, 6-1.  Louisiana then wrapped up the doubles point when at No. 3 the Cajuns pair of sophomore Pearse Dolan and freshman Pierce Gilheany took down the Roadrunners' Bugiga and Breitbach, 6-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): At No. 3 UTSA got their first win when Gabriel Bugiga beat junior Arthur Libaud in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 to put the Roadrunners up 2-0 in the match.  But at No. 4 the Cajuns would take back the lead.  Lago fought back from a one-set deficit to take down UTSA's Javier Gonzalez in three-sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.  Lago showed grit, not letting the 6-2 loss in the first-set bother him, and he controlled the next two sets to give the Cajuns a 2-1 lead in the match.

But the Cajuns would drop the next three matches, all in three-set battles, losing the match in the process, and it started at No. 6 when UTSA's Patrick Poestinger beat freshman Dominik Koening in three-sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.  Koenig fought back in the second set to force a deciding set but couldn't wrap up the comeback dropping the third set, and it tied up the overall score at 2-2.

Freshman Nico Sojka lost his first match of the season at No. 2, when UTSA's Juri Reckow won yet another three-set marathon, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to give UTSA a 3-2 lead.  And the Roadrunners wrapped things up at No. 5 when sophomore Jamie Fraser fell just short of a three-set comeback losing to the Roadrunners' Joao Ceolin, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, to put the final score at 4-2 with UTSA in front.

VS. DEPAUL
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): DePaul came out and grabbed the doubles point, with a win at No. 3 starting it off when the Blue Demon's paring of Zador and Tonejc beat the Libaud and Fraser 6-4.  But the Cajuns bounced right back with a hard-fought win at No. 2 for the Cajuns pairing of Dolan and Gilheany when they took down DePaul's Tuff and O'Meara 7-6 (7-4).

Unfortunately for the Cajuns at No. 1 the next deciding tiebreaker went in the Blue Demon's favor when DePaul's pair of Galoustian and Spanjaard beat Lago and Kramarov 7-6 (7-3) to wrap up the doubles point giving the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Despite dropping the doubles point, the Cajuns didn't lay down and right off the bat at No. 6 the Cajuns tied things up.  Fraser, in straight sets, dominated DePaul's Conor O'Meara 6-0, 6-1, give the Cajuns their first win of the match.  Louisiana then took the lead at No. 4 when Libaud, in another dominating fashion much like Fraser, took down DePaul's Fran Tonejc in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.  Lago then won his second singles match of the day at No. 3 by taking down DePaul's Tamas Zador in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, to put the Cajuns up 3-1.

Only one win away from completing the comeback, the Cajuns would drop the next three matches, but much like their match earlier in the day against UTSA, it didn't happen without Louisiana putting up a fight, with all three matches going a full three-sets.  Playing No. 1 singles for the first time in his career, Sojka again found himself in a three-set battle, losing to DePaul's Alex Galoustian, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.  Sojka showed the fight that had him undefeated entering the day as he pushed things to the deciding third-set, but the wear and tear of playing two three-set matches in one day caught up to him and he fell in the final set.

DePaul then took the next match from the Cajuns when at No. 2 when the Blue Demon's Boris Spanjaard beat Kramarov in three-sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.  It meant things would come down to No. 5 where a real contest was underway.

Gilheany and DePaul's Tripp Tuff battled it out to decide who would win the overall match, and in the end, Tuff would come out ahead of Gilheany after three-sets, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).  Despite it being the clinching match for DePaul, Gilheany, in a match with two tiebreakers, showed his determination to not give the Blue Demons the win easily.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana finishes up the HEB Tournament of Champions with one final match when they play UT Rio Grande Valley in the seventh-place match on Saturday, Mar. 3 at 9:30 a.m. on HEB Courts.
