The crowd of 2,475 set a program record for single-game attendance
LAFAYETTE - Playing in front of a program record crowd of 2,475, the Louisiana soccer welcomed South Alabama to the Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex on Thursday. Despite the packed house, the defending Sun Belt Conference champion Jaguars came away with the 3-0 win.
All three Jaguar goals came off set pieces. Their first goal came in the game's 11th minute when April Lantaigne's free-kick was perfectly placed into the top left corner of the net. The Jags added two goals, 90 seconds apart, in the second half with both coming off a corner kick. Despite pressure from the visitors, Louisiana only had to make two saves on the night.
"The first goal was magnificent," said head coach Chris McBride. "They created good space to attack the ball. I thought we had opportunities, we just weren't clinical enough in front of the goal and they capitalized."
The Ragin' Cajuns weren't without their chances. They finished the night with 13 shots with five on goal. Their best chance came on a breakaway when Tatum Beck beat the defense on the left side but her shot was pushed away.
"We had our chances, we just didn't capitalize," said McBride. "A couple of balls went across the box with good service but we didn't attack them or we got some shots but didn't get them on target. There are a couple of plays in each half and we need to capitalize on them. Once we find a way to put them in the back of the net, it's a different outcome at the end of the day."
Louisiana is halfway through SBC action, surviving a difficult schedule. The team has work to do but the road to the conference championships is in front of them with all five remaining games against teams behind them in the standings.
"You play tough teams and they make you better," said McBride. "Hopefully that can transpire through the rest of the season. We'll regroup and get together for Sunday's road game and take it one game at a time."
Louisiana hits the road to face Coastal Carolina beginning at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday.
