Scott Raines joins the Louisiana men’s basketball staff after a long and successful career in the junior college ranks, where he won 222 games as a head coach.
Raines most recently served as the head coach of Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, from 2013-22, where he won 170 games. Four times Raines guided the Hawks to a 20-win season, including back-to-back 24-win campaigns in 2013-14 and 2014-15 in one of the toughest conferences in the NJCAA. His last season saw the Hawks have the fifth-best scoring defense in the nation at 59.3 points per game. Raines also served as an assistant coach at Howard from 2005-08 and at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, Missouri, in 2004-05.
He got his first collegiate head coaching job at Midland College in Midland, Texas, where he led the Chaparrals for two seasons and was the assistant coach from 1999-01. There, Raines coached current Louisiana head coach Quannas White before finishing his eligibility at Oklahoma.
Raines spent time in Norman before moving to Midland. He was the Director of Operations at Oklahoma under the current Houston head coach, Kelvin Sampson, for two seasons from 1997-99. Before that, he was an assistant coach with the women’s basketball team for the 1996-97 season under Hall of Fame head coach Sherri Coale. He also saw success at the high school level, coaching Hallsville High School in Hallsville, Missouri in 2003-04, where he went 24-6 in his lone season.
No stranger to higher education, Raines has also served in various roles in college administration. He most recently was the Enrollment Coach at College of the Mainland in Texas City, Texas. He was also the Dean of Students at Howard College from 2008-10 before moving to the position of Registrar from 2010-13, before returning to coaching.
Raines played collegiately at Oklahoma Christian in Edmond, Oklahoma, and Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. He capped his collegiate career at OC by scoring 448 points in a single season.
He is married to Kelly Raines, the current Athletic Director and head softball coach at Galveston College, a junior college in Galveston, Texas. They have a son, Austen, who is signed to play baseball next year at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas. He holds a Bachelor's in Computer Science and Math from Oklahoma Christian and an Associate's in Computer Science from Northeastern Junior College.
