Josh White joins the Cajuns after six seasons at Texas Southern

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana men's basketball team announced Josh White as an assistant coach on Wednesday. White, the younger brother of head coach Quannas White, joins the Louisiana staff after six seasons on the staff at Texas Southern, including the last four as an assistant coach.

The Tigers reached three NCAA Tournaments and won a pair of First Four games, the second and third tournament wins for the program, with White on the staff of his collegiate coach, Johnny Jones. White played a key role in the development of Tyrik Armstrong and Eden Ewing, who would eventually play overseas, and All-SWAC performers in Armstrong, Yahuza Rasas, and 2020-21 SWAC Newcomer of the Year, Michael Weathers.

White broke into the collegiate coaching ranks as an assistant coach at Baton Rouge Community College. That season, the Bears went 17-9 under then head coach Eric "Ricky" Wilson, tying the then-school record for wins in a single season. White then moved on to spend two seasons at the University of Houston in an internal operations role, following Quannas. Prior to jumping to the collegiate ranks, he worked under Quannas as an assistant coach with the Louisiana Dynasty AAU team and worked as a personal basketball trainer.

White was a star player at the University of North Texas from 2007-11 while they were a member of the Sun Belt Conference. He finished his career as the fourth-leading scorer in program history with 1,668 points and was the first player in school history to amass 1,600 points and 300 assists with the Mean Green. In 2017, he was elected to the North Texas Hall of Fame.

He began his collegiate career with a bang, earning SBC Freshman of the Year honors in 2007-08 after leading the Mean Green in scoring at 13.9 ppg. He was named to the Freshman Mid-Major All-American Team by CollegeInsider.com along with a spot on the Mid-Major All-Freshman Second Team by CollegeHoops.net. White would go on to earn two All-SBC Team honors, two All-SBC Tournament Team honors, and was part of the 2009-10 squad that won the SBC Tournament and reached the NCAA Tournament.

He remains the fourth leading scorer in Mean Green history and is third in games played (126), fifth in three-pointers made (185), fifth in made free throws (485), fourth in free throw percentage (.849), and fourth in assists (331). In 2007-08, White shot .458 from three-point range, the second-best clip in UNT history, and in 2008-09, White's .906 percentage from the free throw line ranks tops in school history.

White was a star at Christian Life Academy in Baton Rouge, where he was selected by the Baton Rouge Advocate as the All-Metro Most Outstanding Player in 2006 and 2007, the MVP of the state's Top 28 Tournament in each of the last two seasons, and the overall state MVP in 2007. He averaged over 24 points per game over his four-year varsity career and had Christian Life ranked as the fourth-best team in the state, regardless of classification, according to MaxPreps.com. He was twice named to the Baton Rouge Advocate's Star of Stars squad, has been part of two national and eight state championships in club and high school competition, and was a Nominee for Louisiana's Mr. Basketball and the McDonald's All-America team.

A three-time Louisiana All-State selection at point guard, White led Christian Life Academy to back-to-back Class 1A state titles. As a senior, he earned the state's Most Outstanding Player award from the Louisiana Sportswriters Association. He averaged 25.3 points, 7.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game in his final year. In the playoffs, White helped Christian Life cruise to a 33.6 point margin of victory in the team's six playoff wins, including a pair of 50-plus point wins, and earned District 7-1A MVP honors in each of the last three years

The son of Clarence White III and Colette White Pate, White is a native of New Orleans, where his love for basketball began at the age of 4. White participated in youth camps across the country. He played for Senior Advisor to former United States President Joe Biden, Cedric Richmond, for two years and won a National Biddy Basketball Championship.
