Markle collects three hits; Morgan, Tollett stellar as Cajuns eliminate Eagles
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Lee Amedee's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning snapped a 4-4 tie and Louisiana scored in its last three innings to erase a 3-1 deficit and defeat Georgia Southern, 5-4, in an elimination game at the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship on Thursday at Riverwalk Stadium.
Fifth-seeded Louisiana (27-30) remained alive in the double-elimination tournament after picking up its first win in Montgomery since winning a pair of games against Coastal Carolina in 2023.
The Ragin' Cajuns will face the loser of Thursday's late contest between top-seeded Coastal Carolina and No. 4-seeded Marshall on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Chase Morgan and JR Tollett combined to allow an earned run with 11 strikeouts as Louisiana faced Georgia Southern (28-31) in the postseason for the first time since the Ragin' Cajuns claimed a 7-6 win in the 2022 SBC Championship Game.
Drew Markle went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases as Louisiana finished with seven hits in the game. Markle reached on a first-inning single, stole second, and scored on Luke Yuhasz's RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
Markle was responsible for a two-out, two-run rally in the seventh after he drove in Brooks Wright on a single to center before scoring on a stolen base and two Eagle errors for a 4-3 lead.
Morgan struck out nine batters and scattered six hits in 5.0 innings of work, getting out of a second-inning jam after Georgia Southern put two runners in scoring position with no outs. The left-hander sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a Luke Odden pop-up to keep the Eagles off the board.
After retiring the Eagles in order in the fourth, Morgan allowed a pair of singles before a throwing error loaded the bases with no outs. Morgan fanned Sean White and got JP Herrholz to foul out before Juju Stevens gave Georgia Southern a 3-1 lead with a bases-clearing double.
Amedee, who was 0-for-1 with two RBI, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth for Louisiana before taking the lead in the seventh.
Stevens, who was 6-for-6 in Tuesday's 13-8 win over Arkansas State, tied the game in the eighth with an opposite-field home run to right before Tollett (6-4) retired the next three batters to end the threat.
Stelly, who had his nine-game hit streak snapped in Wednesday's 9-5 loss to Marshall, led off the eighth with a single off Georgia Southern reliever Garrett Mackowiak (0-1) before advancing to third on a pair of wild pitches. Amedee would follow with a fly ball to right field, allowing Stelly to score the go-ahead run.
Tollett pitched the final 4.0 innings in his first relief outing since March 8 against Dallas Baptist. The right-hander allowed a one-out triple to Nico Senese in the seventh but was aided by a stellar defensive play by Amedee, who fielded Sean White's squeeze bunt, flipped it to Jose Torres for an out at the plate.
Yuhasz went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Louisiana with Connor Cuff adding a fifth-inning single.
Stevens was 2-for-4 with four RBI for the Eagles with Senese going 2-for-4 with a double and triple. Carter DeGondea earned the start for Georgia Southern going 5.1 innings and allowed four hits with four strikeouts.
