Ortiz’s Goal Not Enough as Cajuns Fall for the First Time in 2024

9/8/2024 10:25:00 PM | Soccer

Louisiana was unbeaten over the previous seven contests to start the season

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - Despite an early goal from Lucy Ortiz, the Louisiana soccer team saw their seven-match unbeaten streak end on Sunday at LSU by a score of 3-1. The Cajuns had matched the longest unbeaten streak in program history and hadn't trailed until the second half of tonight's contest.

Oritz gave the Cajuns the lead in the 25th minute with a one-timer off a perfect pass from Megan Bradley. For Ortiz, it was her third goal of the season in eight matches, after scoring one in the first three seasons of her collegiate career.

"Lucy has been in a different position for us this year," said head coach Chris McBride. "The last two seasons she's played a more defensive role for us out of necessity. This year the team has come in prepared to play in different ways and that's allowed her to take on a more advanced role. We know what a threat she is and she showed that tonight."

That first half goal, the first the Cajuns have ever scored against LSU, gave the Cajuns the lead heading into the locker room. Louisiana led on the scoreboard but trailed elsewhere on the stat sheet, falling behind in shots 11-3 in the opening 45 minutes of action.

"I thought we had a really good gameplan," said McBride. "I know we would get opportunities but not as early in the game as we did. When you take the lead like that, it changes what you do as a team."

After a quiet start to the season, Natalie Mayes had a big night in keeping Louisiana in the game. The sophomore made nine saves on the night after only being called on to make 12 in the first seven matches.

"She commanded the box well and made some great saves tonight," said McBride. "She had two excellent saves, one in each half. I'm proud of her performance tonight."

Louisiana looks to start a new unbeaten streak this Thursday at Lamar with kick-off slated for 7 p.m. in Beaumont, Texas.
