Louisiana has won five of the last six in the series

CONWAY, S.C. – The Louisiana men's basketball team begins the new year on the road with a Sun Belt Conference contest at Coastal Carolina. The Cajuns take on the Chanticleers in Conway, South Carolina on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.

It's game two for Louisiana under interim head coach Derrick Zimmerman. In his debut, the Cajuns fell to McNeese, 64-56, in a back-and-forth contest in the Cajundome. Three Cajuns scored in double figures, led by Mostapha El Moutaouakkil's 14 points. 

The Chanticleers enter the game at 7-6 under first-year coach Justin Gray. They fell in their SBC opener on December 21 to Arkansas State, 97-67. They're led by sophomore guard Rasheed Jones, averaging 13.5 points while adding 4.9 rebounds.

Story Lines
• Louisiana won their Sun Belt Conference opener, holding off defending regular season champion App State 68-61 in the Cajundome. Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led the offense with 15 points and eight rebounds. Kyran Ratliff recorded his second double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
• The Cajuns have won five of the last six in the series with Coastal Carolina. Last season, Louisiana beat Coastal twice, once in the Cajundome and once in the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Pensacola, Florida. Louisiana held the Chanticleers to 40 percent shooting from the field and 3-for-20 from three in the win in Pensacola.
• Senior Kentrell Garnett made the 200th three-pointer of his Cajun career earlier this season, becoming the seventh player in program history to reach that mark. Garnett is now up to 205 threes and next up on the all-time list is Michael Allen at 208.
 • Through the season's first 13 games, the Ragin' Cajuns have played the second-most difficult schedule in the SBC per NET Ranking. The average opponent's NET ranking this season is 144, behind James Madison at 140.
• Each of the last two games in Conway were decided by a single point. The Chanticleers won in 2023, 77-76, while the Cajuns won 65-64 in 2022. 
Derrick Zimmerman is coaching his second game as the interim head coach of the Ragin' Cajuns after the departure of Bob Marlin.
